Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving will be rounding up his teammates this September where they will work on conditioning drills ahead of the notoriously tough preseason workouts held by head coach Byron Scott.

In an interview with Cavs.com beat writer Joe Gabriele, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year says that once the rehabilitation process on his broken hand is complete, he wants to get his team in shape as Scott now has a full three weeks with which to work. The third-year Cavaliers head coach is known for his rigorous conditioning-based preseason workouts wherein the team does not pick up a basketball for several days.

“I think there are only a couple of us here from last year’s Training Camp,” said Irving.  ”And we all know what to expect.

“It’ll be fun. Coming back into the gym with everybody – it’ll be fun.”

Irving’s rookie campaign was shortened by the NBA lockout which included not only a 66-game schedule but a compressed preseason. With the departure of Antawn Jamison and Anthony Parker, Irving will undoubtedly be asked to step up into more of a leadership-type role, with this workout serving as an excellent start.
