A few nights ago Carmelo Anthony dropped 50 points on the Miami Heat (minus LBJ, D-Wade) and last night he dropped 40 on Atlanta, but know one in the league mentioned it. Yea a short media bite on ESPN and NBATV, but in the end this was not nearly as mentioned in the same breath the way Stephen Curry’s 50+ night was at MSG. Why is this this? Why does Melo not get the respect and accolades he deserves? This is the question that eats me up inside.
Melo is known for his prolific offensive game. He has 4 skill sets that set him apart from the every day player.
1) He can drive to the hole for the lay up or the foul.
2) He can hit the mid-range jumper.
3) He can shoot the three.
4) He can post up in many different ways.
These 4 skill sets makes Melo a COMPLETE player and SUPESTAR on the offensive end of the floor. His biggest challenge is on the D, but this season he has been a better defensive player than all the years he has been in the league put together.
This year Carmelo Anthony is at the top of the league in scoring, but this is not mentioned or talked about here in NY. Media types bash his selfishness and his lack of leadership qualities. The media and some fans also blame Melo for getting coaches fired and influencing the organization into letting free agents go (Jeremy Lin).
If you look at the big picture, the NY Knicks are about to win their division for the first time in what seems like 1 billion years and they are a top 2/3 seed in the Eastern Conference as of this minute. Where would this team be if not for Carmelo Anthony? I am pretty sure they would not be where they are now, that’s for sure. However, the backlash on Melo is still a simmering pot on twitter and constantly mentioned on ESPN Radio from many different hosts (mostly Jared Max and Colin Cowherd). Many others have weighed in with their strong opinions of Melo and his lack of leadership, chemistry issues with his teammates and his over all “black hole game” mentality. They call him a ball stopper and a Sub-Par Superstar, is this right or wrong?
Even though I DO respect others opinions on this subject, I am still trying to understand what these people want in a player? There is only one Lebron, so a comparison to him is not a fair one to make. Melo is Melo that’s all, let him be who he is and let him do his thing. He can do more than most in this league; He has brought the NY Knicks to this point of the season and ready to lead the Knicks in the playoffs. With his outstanding play and his leadership, he has taken the New York Knicks to new heights. Let us respect and appreciate what he has brought here. Let us thank Melo for being in New York and not disrespect him like some of us did with Patrick Ewing.
