As a member of one of the league’s most fashion-forward teams, keeping up off-court appearances is key for Carmelo Anthony. When he’s not making the fashion rounds in New York City, he’s showcasing his style sense abroad, catching runway shows in London, Paris and Milan. British GQ caught up with the Knicks forward before his team squared off against the Detroit Pistons at the The O2 in London. A Rag & Bone clad Anthony dished on his personal style preferences, including his love of watches and sunglasses. He also offered fashion advice for taller guys, talked about dressing down, and discussed how the NBA dress code altered the league’s sartorial state. Below are a few excerpts and full for the full piece, read on here. I have a bunch of timepieces. I love collecting watches – ever since I could start affording them. I could never afford watches, but now I take time to educate myself and learn about them. When I’m not going to the tailor, places like Rag & Bone and Ralph Lauren cater to the taller guys. So I’ve been trying to have fun with some of their pieces. Myself and Rag & Bone have formed a relationship over the last couple of years, and we’re looking to try and do some bigger things. Ever since the commissioner changed the dress code in the NBA, guys have dressed better. At first it was kind of hard to make that transition. Over the years, the fashion world has grown and players are starting to get into fashion more, get into different things. Now different companies are starting to make things that cater to bigger and taller guys, and guys are just taking advantage of that right now. We’ve got a few guys on the team kind of dabbling with fashion. Tyson Chandler has his own unique style. Amar’e [Stoudemire] has his own style. I think guys are feeding off each other and finding their own style, making their own path when it comes to fashion. Anthony attended the Versace runway show during Men’s Fashion Week in Milan in 2011, together with Dwyane Wade. He also spoke about the designer in the piece.
