Can you believe it has been 17 years since the movie “Celtic Pride,” was released in theaters. No, you probably weren’t thinking about it. The movie, starring Damon Wayans, Dan Aykroyd and Daniel Stern did not get great reviews. Nonetheless, as far as sports comedies go, it was pretty good. It was mostly a dark comedy, though. Certainly, two colors stand out from the movie, purple and green. Never can I remember two teams being so often portrayed in a movie. I know “Major League” was about the Cleveland Indians and I remember Whoopi Goldberg’s “Eddie” all about the New York Knicks, but no movie stands out to me that highlighted two teams throughout its plot line, other than “Celtic Pride.” How did the producers end up deciding on the Utah Jazz as the other team, anyway? The Boston angle was understandable. Boston has a reputation for over-the-top sports fans. Spoiler alert: At the end of the movie, the Jazz win Game 7 of the NBA Finals over the Celtics, upsetting the home Boston Gar...

Utah Jazz: Examining Their Incredible 5 Man Core

Utah Jazz: Examining Their Incredible 5 Man Core By Mike Elworth: Owner and Publisher/Hoopstuff… Right now to start the season the Jazz may be 0-5, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t any positive things going on with this team. Entering the season, nobody saw the Utah Jazz as a playoff contender and looking at their roster it is easy to see why, as they are one of the...

Utah Jazz: My kingdom for a point guard

The Utah Jazz’s 0-4 start is the worst since the team moved from New Orleans in 1979. The roster was designed to not win many games, but there’s a difference between that and not winning any games.  Even if their record isn’t their highest priority this year, the glaring talent hole at the point guard position affects what the rest of the team can do. The Utah Jazz point-guard...

Evaluating the 0-5 Utah Jazz

We’re five games into the regular season, and while many fans may have thought a 2-3 or 1-4 start was in the cards, they’re 0-5. So how good or bad is this team, and these players? Compare the Core 4 with everyone else. They’re top 4 in scoring, in PER, in field-goal percentage. But to break it down further, when you look at the stat lines of the Core 4, isn’t that about...

Future overpaid Celtic(?) Gordon Hayward comes to town tonight

With the Jazz visiting the C's this evening, one of the major story lines is Butler alum Gordon Hayward playing against his former coach, Brad Stevens.  Hayward will be a restricted free agent at season's end, and the rumors about him potentially coming to Boston have been abuzz pretty much since the day the Celtics hired Stevens. Yesterday in his "Eight Fearless...

Kidd connects with Jefferson before home coaching debut

The irony wasn’t lost on Richard Jefferson. As Jason Kidd was preparing to make his home coaching debut, Jefferson was going through another NBA season, the 13th in a career that began with Kidd and the Nets in 2001. “I made a joke, ‘Now he’s the rookie and I’m the vet,’ ” Jefferson said with a smile, before the Nets crushed the Jazz, 104-88, Tuesday night at Barclays...

Underrated Stat of the Night - Jazz 11/6

Thanks to a dominant second quarter performance, the Celtics were able to end their 4-game start-to-the-season losing streak tonight by beating the winless Utah Jazz, 97-87. Now I'm just gonna say this to all C's fans: enjoy this victory. I get that it was over the worst team in the league, but still, it was a W. The Celts probably won't have many of those this season...

The Best of Tommy - Jazz 11/6

As always, Tommy put last night's game in complete perspective 140 characters at a time. Before the game, he talked about what the Celtics need to do to improve and he hit the nail on the head when he said that they need to find the right mix. I think Brad Stevens did a good job of doing that last night when he changed the lineups and rotations. And, they needed to find a...

Jazz-Raptors Preview

Although they're the NBA's lone winless team, the Utah Jazz might be able to end the franchise's worst start in 39 years given their history against the Toronto Raptors. The reeling Jazz hope to finally end to their season-opening drought as they seek their eighth straight win in Toronto on Saturday night. Coming off a season-worst 97-73 loss at Chicago on Friday, not...

Jazz-Bulls Preview

A visit from the winless Utah Jazz might be what the struggling Chicago Bulls need to get back on track. Looking to avoid a third straight defeat, the Bulls try for a sixth consecutive victory over the Jazz on Friday night. Even with Derrick Rose back from missing last season with a knee injury, Chicago (1-3) has yet to find a rhythm. The Bulls' only victory came by one point...

Celtics-Jazz Live: Jeff Green, Gordon Hayward Face Off in Battle of Winless Teams

8 a.m. ET: Somebody will leave TD Garden on Wednesday night with their first win of the season. So there’s that. The winless Utah Jazz (0-4) visit the winless Celtics (0-4) in a battle of squads that are, well, winless.
