The Boston Celtics began their rebuilding process by taking Kelly Olynyk in the NBA Draft on Thursday. The Boston Celtics are clearly in full rebuilding mode. On Thursday, the Celtics agreed to trade Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Jason Terry to the Brooklyn Nets for Gerald Wallace, Kris Humphries’ expiring contract, MarShon Brooks, Keith Bogans, Kris Joseph, and three future first round picks according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. Garnett agreed to waive his no-trade clause after the Nets guaranteed the final year of his contract in 2014-’15 at $12 million.Another reason Garnett waived the no-trade clause was to play alongside Pierce for the opportunity to capture another championship. Bogans would be a sign-and-trade player since he is a free agent. The first round selections will be in 2014, 2016, and 2018. The 2014 pick could become either the Nets or the Atlanta Hawks pick depending on whatever the worst selection is for the Celtics. In 2017, the Celtics will have the opportunity to swap picks with the Nets if the Nets hold the higher pick. There are reports from Sports Illustrated’s  Chris Mannix that the Celtics could swap Humphries to the Charlotte Bobcats for Ben Gordon. This deal will become official on July 10th because the 2012-’13 season will officially conclude on July 9th. In the first round of the NBA Draft, the Celtics opened the post-Doc Rivers era by acquiring the 13th pick from the Dallas Mavericks. The Celtics took Kelly Olynyk from Gonzaga. The Celtics sent the Mavericks the 16th pick and two future second-rounders. Then the Mavericks eventually shipped the 16th choice to the Hawks for the 18th and 44th picks in the 2013 NBA Draft. Olynyk is a 7-footer who can shoot and take the ball to the net off the dribble. He is skilled offensively in the pick-and-roll. The native of Toronto needs to improve his rebounding.  The All-American Olynyk is not very fast, athletic, and he is not a great rim protector. While Olynyk’s offensive game is polished, he could get better defensively. The Celtics also traded for Colton Iverson out of Colorado State. Iverson was chosen by the Indiana Pacers with the 53rd pick in the NBA Draft, but he was sent to the Celtics for cash. While Olynyk can stretch the floor with his ability to shoot from the perimeter, Iverson is more of a strong interior player. The 7-footer will only shoot the jump hook in the post. Defensively, Iverson lacks quickness and athleticism, which will limit his ability to defend rotations and become a shot-blocker. With his activity in the paint, Iverson could become like the Pacers’ Tyler Hansbrough, a player off the bench who brings physicality in the paint. The Celtics also signed Phil Pressey of Missouri, Tim Abromaitis out of Notre Dame, Marquette’s Darius Johnson-Odom, and Tony Mitchell. All five of these players will compete on the summer league team in Orlando. After sending Doc Rivers to the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday for an unprotected 2015 first round choice, the Celtics are still without a coach. There are many names being floated around such as Jay Larranage who will coach the Celtics’ summer league team and he spent two years coaching in the NBA Development League. Since the Celtics did not draft a point guard, it seems that the Celtics will hold onto Rajon Rondo at point guard. The Celtics appear to be building around Rondo. They will not need Rondo to rush back from his ACL injury because they hold two first round picks in the 2014 draft that is expected to be strong with players such as Kansas’ Andrew Wiggins and Marcus Smart of Oklahoma State. Danny Ainge is back to wheeling and dealing to acquire assets in order to build the next great Celtics team.

How do Pierce & KG look as Brooklyn Nets?

Pic by RHurstDesigns. Curious to see if Garnett goes back to his #21 (similar to Ray going back to #34 with the Heat) or if he sticks with #5. My guess is he sticks with 5. Really hard to see Paul Pierce in another jersey. I hate the system in the NBA where you have to suck and root for losses in order to rebuild.
