The Sacramento Kings have announced an extension to the contract of star center Demarcus Cousins. The extension is worth $62 million over the next four years. This move by the Kings is a far cry from just a few months ago when Cousins was rumored to be on the trading block. The ownership of the team was in major considerations of moving the whole franchise to Seattle, even gaining permission to use the nickname “SuperSonics”. Despite his numerous on the court issues, the Kings feel their rewards are much greater than their risks. New owner Vivek Ranadive has made Cousins a vocal point of his organizational plans since taking over the team in late May. Perhaps the appeal for Cousins to agree to stay in Sacramento had something to do with NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal becoming a minority owner of the Kings. This move by O’Neal is a far cry from his remarks as a player. He was famously quoted for calling the team in Sacramento the “Queens” when facing them in the playoffs. O’Neal has expressed his interest in working with Cousins and making him the best big man in the league. With O’ Neal as his mentor, the Kings are even more confident in Cousins becoming their franchise player. Controversially, he’s already one of the best young talents in the game. His upside is undeniable, and that’s what the Kings are banking on. The former Kentucky Wildcat was taken with the 5th pick overall in the 2010 NBA Draft. Cousins becomes the second Kentucky player coached by John Calipari to receive a maximum contract deal. The Washington Wizards announced a contract extension with former No. 1 pick John Wall for 5 years and $80 million. Wall and Cousins were teammates at Kentucky in 2010. Cousins has averaged 16.3 points and almost 10 rebounds a game for his three year career.
