Jan 24, 2018; Dallas, TX, USA; Houston Rockets guard Chris Paul (3) and James Harden (13) talk during the game against the Dallas Mavericks at American Airlines Center.  Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

If you ask Chris Paul who’s going to take NBA MVP honors this season, the answer is simple. It’s his teammate, James Harden.

Look at what (Harden) does for our team. All everybody does now is look at the numbers. Nothing against stats. … But nobody looks at how the game went. Watch the game, too. I’m here. I get to see what he’s doing night in, night out.”

But the praise for Harden doesn’t stop there. In fact, it even ramps up.

A dynamic guard like that, a guy who can score and pass, do whatever, I think he showed everybody why he’s going to be the MVP. Not even going to be close.

That’s a bold claim, of course. But it’s certainly not a sensational one. On the season, Harden leads the league in scoring (31.2 PPG). But he’s also averaging 9.1 assists and 1.8 despite Chris Paul playing alongside him. When the Rockets acquired CP3, detractors of the trade pointed to the fact that both Harden and Paul need the ball in their hands to be as good as they can be. But the Rockets are flourishing regardless of who has the ball.

On the season, they are 38-13 and two games back of the Warriors out west. In fact, only the Celtics and Warriors have more wins than Houston, though the Rockets have a higher winning percentage than the former.

Meanwhile, Harden continues to play some of the best ball of his career. And right now, there’s no end in sight. Therefore, it’s hard to argue with Chris Paul.
