Prior to this year’s NBA draft most people didn’t know who Damian Lillard was. He was a two star recruit out of high school and played at Weber State for four years. Nothing really special in that, but wherever he played he was a worthy scorer and passer. He led the NCAA in scoring his senior year with 24.5 points a game. Although he hasn’t always competed against the stiffest competition, Lillard has impressed everyone who has watched him play. This is what landed him the as 6th overall pick in Portland a team who was in need of a stud guard to go along with Lamarcus Aldridge. via oregonlive.com After he was selected he headed to the NBA summer league, where all the rookies and aspiring NBA players congregate to prove themselves. Lillard definitely showed his talents by winning the co-MVP of the league averaging 26.5 points, 4 rebounds, and 5.3 assists. Then came along the NBA preseason where fans would really start seeing their teams start to shape up. Fans had a lot to be excited for in Portland as they watched Damian Lillard and Lamarcus Aldridge work the pick and roll. With Lillard’s ability to facilitate, shoot, and get to the hoop the Blazers seem to be unstoppable on offense. When Aldridge, with his 6’11 frame and high release, is hitting his jump shot the tandem is dangerous. It seemed as though Lillard was for real, but his real test would be how he plays in a full 82 game regular season. In his first game Lillard joined Oscar Robertson and Isaiah Thomas as the only players in NBA history to put up 20 points and 10 assists in a rookie debut. He then went ahead and followed that game by a 21-point and 7 assist game in a loss to Oklahoma City Thunder two days later. I know it has only been two games but Lillard is a legitimate scoring point guard. As of now he has my vote for Rookie of the Year and Offensive Rookie of the Year. He is exciting to watch and has made Portland a feared opponent for the first time since Brandon Roy retired. I can’t wait to see what else he can do and watch how his game develops. Now it’s time to just sit back and watch. -Goldman
