Since leaving Kentucky in 2010, Demarcus Cousins has had a big impact on the NBA. He’s quickly emerging as the best young center in the game. He has all of the physical tools to become as big of a star as he wants to be on the professional level. The one huge knock against Cousins is his mental state of mind. Cousins was charged with 10 technical fouls this past season, leading the league. He has spent his short NBA tenure in Sacramento, which has had it’s own share of turmoil to deal with. After the team was finally bought by a local Sacramento group, the organization didn’t have to worry about relocation. The rumors of the team moving to Seattle (Louisville?), were finally put to rest. With the start of next season to look forward to, the Kings are looking forward to a clean slate. With a (hopefully) stable ownership group, they look to add a general manager and coach to build the team back to a playoff contender in the Western Conference. One of the huge decisions facing this organization is what to do about Demarcus Cousins. While he is a huge talent, his attitude can overshadow some of his potential. Will this new ownership, coach, and GM buy into Cousins? Or will he be changing uniforms come next season? If the Kings decide to separate themselves from Cousins, he should have no issues finding a job elsewhere. According to NBA.com’s Chad Ford, a line of suitors is already forming just in case Cousins lands on the trading block. Sources say the Cavs have already begun to explore what they can get with the No. 1 pick. If they can get a young big or small forward in return, Gilbert will be pushing for them to trade the pick. Who can they get? The pickings will be slim. Teams aren’t dying to get the No. 1 pick. But one name that you shouldn’t totally rule out is the Sacramento Kings’ DeMarcus Cousins. The Cavs won’t be the only team calling the Kings once they get a new GM in place. Sources say that the Charlotte Bobcats and Dallas Mavericks will also have interest in Cousins if Sacramento’s new management decides to cut ties with Cousins. Out of those teams listed, the best situation (if he were to leave Sacramento) would be Dallas. They need a lot of help for Dirk Nowitzki for the Mavericks to even think about returning to those days when they beat the Heat to win a title. I could see Mavs owner Mark Cuban loving Cousins for his attitude, swagger, and high ceiling. I think Cuban would put up with any “antics” better than most other NBA owners. Cleveland and Charlotte are both in major rebuilding mode and would essentially be in the same position that Sacramento is in now. A trade wouldn’t make much sense for either team or Cousins.
