Rex Chapman detected a Nuggets player was high before a playoff game The popular recreational drug known as marijuana already is starting to take off in Denver, Colorado. In fact, stores are starting to stock their shelves in anticipation for the New Year’s grand opening. But rewind back to 2010 and pot was not legal – at least recreationally. Which makes the newest report of a Denver Nuggets player being high on the morning of a playoff game in 2010, all the more interesting. Via The Denver Post: It was the morning of a 2010 playoff game, and one of the Nuggets had just smoked some nuggets. As the team practiced, the player was so high that Rex Chapman, a team executive at the time, had to pull him aside to get him to focus. “Across all walks of life and in every profession, people smoke (marijuana). This is no secret, and pro sports are not exempt,” said Chapman, who played 12 years in the NBA. “But employers deserve and pay for A-plus employees. There is a time and place for everything. As a member of a team, guys owe it to their teammates to put their best foot forward.” I’m sure J.R. Smith would be the popular choice for being the unnamed player showing up high as his track record is a bit spotty when it comes to pot. Smith was recently suspended this season for failing a third drug test. Teams aren’t notified of the first two failed tests thus no suspensions are handed out. It’s not totally fair to point to just J.R. Smith, as the Nuggets have had their share of knuckleheads over the years. Sometimes the past can haunt you, and for Smith, this certainly could be one of those instances.
