This isn’t the first time in recent years that the Detroit Pistons have had logjams at key positions heading into training camp. But thanks to an off-season spent infusing the team with a needed dose of talent those position battles and rotation questions are decidedly more interesting than whether a broken-down Tracy McGrady would cut into the minutes of a broken-down Richard Hamilton. As has been the case since John Kuester was coach Maurice Cheeks will have a glut of perimeter players to choose from. But unlike his predecessors Cheeks’ decisions will have a real impact on the success of the team. While Kuester was deciding between the likes of McGrady and Hamilton for prominent roles and Lawrence Frank was debating the merits of Austin Daye vs. Damien Wilkins for backup minutes at small forward Cheeks will have to do things like find minutes for promising second-year player Kyle Singler rejuvenate proven players who struggled last season such as Rodney Stuckey and Jonas Jerebko develop rookie Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and figure out a point guard rotation that suddenly has decent depth for the first time in five years with Brandon Jennings Chauncey Billups Will Bynum and Stuckey all likely vying for minutes. Four of the five spots in Detroit’s starting lineup figure to be set with Jennings Josh Smith Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond. At shooting guard the Pistons could slide Billups who played shooting guard for the Los Angeles Clippers the past two seasons there. They could throw Caldwell-Pope into the lineup early on. They could give Stuckey a chance (albeit risking putting a really awful shooting lineup on the floor to start games) or they could even play Singler who played out of position as a shooting guard last season but occasionally held his own.
