The Dallas Mavericks are 4-4 so far this season without their superstar, Dirk Nowitzki, who is recovering from knee surgery. The team is staying afloat without him, behind the efforts of some of the supporting cast, including O.J. Mayo, Darren Collison, and Chris Kaman.
Dirk, a former NBA Finals MVP, isn’t getting any younger. He wants to be on the court as badly as anyone, as he knows that his window might be starting to close to grab another ring. It’s still very early in the season, but Nowitzki is frustrated that he isn’t already back in action.
Via CBS Sports:
“When it originally hurt, three to six weeks, in my mind, I’m thinking in two weeks, I’m back,” said Nowitzki, who has returned quickly from several ankle sprains during his 14-year career. “But unfortunately, this is not how it happens. It’s my first knee surgery of my career and unfortunately this stuff takes a little longer than we expected.
“So I’ve just got to be patient and do the smart thing and keep working.”
“Gotta admit, I’m really already getting tired of rehab these three weeks,” Nowitzki said. “It’s been three weeks. Obviously, that’s a long time for me watching. So I’m really getting tired and bored of it. But at this point, gotta stay patient and do what the doctors and trainers tell me, just keep rehabbing and see how much longer it is.”
Dallas needs Dirk Nowitzki to be back on the court sooner rather than later. The Mavericks aren’t one of the “super teams” in the league; they are built around one superstar. Their supporting cast is nice; Collison, Kaman, Mayo, Vince Carter, Elton Brand, and Shawn Marion are all good players, but they can’t carry a team on their own.
The Mavericks are built similarly to how they were built when they beat the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals, with Dirk Nowitzki and a supporting cast of Marion, Jason Kidd, Tyson Chandler, Jason Terry, etc.
You don’t want to rush him back, but the Mavericks have to have some sense of urgency here.
