76ers-holiday-eyes-free
It is safe to say that Philadelphia 76ers point guard Jrue Holiday is playing tremendous, to say the least, so far this season. I clearly understand that it has only been about 15 games into the 82-game season, but Holiday has the Sixers playing great team ball through those 15 games, as Philly currently holds a 9-6 record, which is sixth in the Eastern Conference. Keep in mind that the Sixers have been playing without their new star man in the middle, Andrew Bynum. Two weeks after the team announced they hoped Bynum would be cleared to return to practice on Dec. 10, Sixers general manager Tony DiLeo said Saturday the team no longer has any timetable for Bynum’s return. On Sunday, Nov. 25, Holiday broke out as he recorded a career-high 33 points and added 13 assists to lead the Sixers to a 104-101 victory over the Phoenix Suns. The win lifted the Sixers to an 8-6 record. Holiday became the first Sixers guard since Allen Iverson in 2006 to put up 33 points and 13 assists in a game. Is he an NBA All-Star now? Holiday will have to continue to carry this Sixers team on his shoulders. So far this season, Holiday is averaging 18.5 points and 9.1 assists per game, which is third in the NBA behind only Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo. I am a true believer in Holiday and that he is now one of the elite point guards in the NBA. Holiday also has five double-doubles this season, after he only had one all of last year. He leads the 76ers in minutes per game, points per game and assists per game. The next closest to Holiday in scoring is forward Thaddeus Young, who is averaging 13.6 points per game. He’s also second on the team in shooting percentage and has led the team in scoring in eight of Philadelphia’s 14 games. So we know the 22-year-old is enjoying the best season of his four-year career and he is the leader of a potential playoff-team, but how does he stack up against the other guards in the East? The only point guards in the east I can see getting votes over Holiday for the All-Star Game in the Eastern Conference this season are Rondo and Deron Williams. Holiday’s chances will depend on what the head coach of the Eastern Conference All-Stars thinks of him and how many guards the team plans to carry, which are things that are just too difficult to predict right now. If Holiday continues to play at this level however, he makes a really good case for his candidacy. There is a long ways to go until February when the All-Star Game will actually take place in Houston, Texas. When the game does finally take place, in my opinion, Holiday will and should very well be there. Even if Holiday is listed as a reserve-guard for the squad, he deserves the nod.
