For the first time since Jan. 28, Goran Dragic will be in uniform tonight against the Utah Jazz. Dragic cut his foot on a piece of glass at the end of January that acquired several stiches and kept the point guard to miss seven games.
Journeyman Zabian Dowdell has done a nice job in Dragic’s absence. In the last seven games in which the Suns have gone 5-2, Dowdell has averaged 4.5 points and and 2.8 assists a game. He has also done a very nice job defensively against opposing point guards.
There is no guarantee that Dragic will remain this team’s backup point guard behind Steve Nash if he continues to struggle like he did before the foot injury took place. Dowdell isn’t as gifted offensively as Dragic is, but he is a better pure point guard. In six less minutes of action, Dowdell is averaging only a half an assist less than his counterpart. Yes Dowdell went undrafted and isn’t highly heralded, but he might be exactly what the Suns have been looking for years in their backup behind the former two-time MVP.
