George Karl will not return as coach of the Denver Nuggets next season.
The team chose to part ways with Karl, who had one year left on his contract, on Wednesday. FOXSports.com's Bill Reiter confirmed the news through an NBA source.
Karl was reportedly pushing for a contract extension, but Nuggets ownership wasn't ready to give him one. Karl lost one of his biggest supporters when general manager Masai Ujiri, who won Executive of the Year this season, left for the Raptors last month.
Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried tweeted after hearing the news: "So we lost a GM now a coach what's next!?"
Karl was named the NBA's Coach of the Year after leading Denver to a team-record 57 wins this season, including a franchise-best 38 at the Pepsi Center. The Nuggets ran off 15 straight wins at one point and went 24-4 after the All-Star break.
Denver was eliminated in six games by the Golden State Warriors in the first round of the playoffs.
