Seems like something big happens in the sports world on July 4th and yesterday was no different. The Los Angeles Lakers have themselves a bona fide PG after completing a sign and trade deal with the Phoenix Suns, for Steve Nash. As many people that saw this as a great move for the Lakers and a significant upgrade over Ramon Sessions, there were others who were quick to decry Nash’s age, and say this deal would have meant more in 2006. Nash is definitely getting up there in age, but last season he almost single-handedly pushed a talent strapped Suns team into the playoffs. His points per game were down a bit but he still averaged over 10 assists per game. The Lakers will still be weak when trying to defend Tony Parker or Russell Westbrook as Nash isn’t known for his defense, but now they will at least have a point guard that doesn’t poop his pants come playoff time, or can only do one thing, like Derek Fisher. Sessions looked completely overwhelmed by the playoff spotlight last season, while Nash is someone that has been through many playoff battles and is desperately seeking a ring. This move doesn’t make LA the favorites in the West but it makes their hopes of surpassing the Spurs and Thunder much more realistic than they were July 3rd.
