During training camp, Sixers head coach Doug Collins talked at lengths about the improvement that Spencer Hawes has shown in practice. On Friday night, Hawes backed up his coaches talk. Hawes finished with an impressive 14 points on 6-8 shooting in the Sixers 103-78 win over the Washington Wizards to give the team a win in their first preseason game of the season.  The teams starting center scored the 14 points in just 18 minutes with a combination of jump shots and downlow put backs, shooting a high percentage and not forcing any shots. The defense and play of Lou Williams (19 points) off of the bench also played a big role in the victory. Hawes was not the only Sixer to shoot a high percentage on the night, as the entire Sixers team was lights out in their first live action since last season. Jrue Holiday came out playing like the player fans hoped he can be, as he looked in control of the offense, distrubting the ball and knocking down the jumper when it was their. Holiday also had an impressive play where he missed a layup, but got the rebound between two Wizards to lay the ball back in. The Sixers led 25-17 at the end of the first quarter. Thaddeus Young also had a good first half for the Sixers as he finsihed with 8 points. Elton Brand chipped in 9 points as the Sixers shot 54 percent in the first half on their way to 56 points and a 21 point lead, 56-35. The Sixers strong defensive effort continued into the 3rd quarter, as they held the Wizards to 24% shooting. The Wizards started to lose their cool midway through the 3rd as Rashard Lewis was called for a technical foul when he argued a charging call. Evan Tuner missed the free throw, but it was the only hiccup for the Sixers in the quarter as they outscored the Wizards 31-16 to put the game away with a commanding 87-51 lead. The Wizards showed signs of life in the final quarter, but the Sixers shut to door on the Wizards to walk away with a convincing victory to move to 1-0 in the preseason. While the Wizards will not trick anybody into thinking they are a playoff team this season, it was good for this young team to get a big win to help their confidence. Everything went according to plan, as they got the win with the blueprint they hope to use all season- Holiday running the show, strong play from the bench and great defense. The Sixers and Wizards will go back at it on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the final preseason game for both teams.  Boxscore:
