by Tracy Weissenberg Philips Arena was bustling Friday night with the start of NBA training camps. All of the returning Hawks appeared to be in fantastic shape, which is a testament to a long offseason of training. NBA veterans Tracy McGrady and Jerry Stackhouse were present, along with the Hawks core that reached four straight postseasons. After practice, I asked Joe Johnson about training this summer at Legacy Fit, a Miami gym that specializes in mixed martial arts training. On whether he participated in any MMA conditioning, Johnson said, “No, I didn’t do no MMA training. They tried to get me to, but by the time we was done with our workout, I was beat, I couldn’t make it.” “They just tried to get us out there in the ring a couple of times, and you know, I wasn’t going for it,” he said. The Hawks’ five-time All-Star worked out with another player who is quickly garnering serious accolades. Johnson and two-time scoring champion Kevin Durant trained in Miami, after which Durant sai...

Atlanta Hawks: Camp Report Day 3

Notes gathered while sleepwalking and dreaming about a sandwich. . . . Rick Sund said the Hawks are interested in Gilbert Arenas and Chauncey Billups if they clear amnesty waivers. If teams with cap space don’t bid on those players by tonight’s deadline, they become free agents. (Note: Arenas already has cleared waivers, according to ESPN’s Marc Stein, and wants to join up...

Atlanta Hawks: Ruck Sund says Hawks don’t want to pay tax, making Jamal Crawford’s return doubtful

GM Rick Sund said the Hawks still “have never been a taxpaying team and our goal is not to pay the tax,” an approach that essentially means the team is out of the running to re-sign Jamal Crawford or use the free-agent guard in a sign-and-trade transaction. “It’s going to be difficult to sign Jamal in a straight signing transaction,” Sund said. “We are looking at other...

Atlanta Hawks: Camp Report Day 1

Notes and quotes from a real, live NBA camp . . . Here is the full camp roster, minus Vladmir Radmanovic, who was signed tonight. I guess he’s the 3-point shooter that both L.D. and Smoove said the Hawks need. “We need a for real, for real knock-down shooter,” Josh said. “I’m not asking for Kyle Korver, but a guy who can just spread the floor and just knock the shot...
