A four game winning streak went down in flames as Atlanta lost to the resurgent 76ers 90-76. This was the first loss since Al Horford went down and comes on the front end of a back-to-back. Atlanta will hustle to the airport to get back home and play Cleveland tomorrow night. After that will be a critical five-game road trip. None of those games will be consecutive, but they will have a day off between them. Among the stops will be Milwaukee, San Antonio, Detoit, New Orleans, and Toronto. I’m sorry, but I have to digress. Wouldn’t it make more sense to put the Spurs and Hornets next to each other and then head north instead of going up and down like a nightmare game of hopscotch? This compressed schedule makes me scratch my head and I can’t be the only one. Back to the game. You know it’s not your night when you’re leading scorer happens to be Willie Green. He had 14, and came in averaging 6.3. Jeff Teague had 12, while Tracy McGrady and Josh Smith each...

After losing Horford, Hawks show surprising grit

When Al Horford tumbled to the court, his hopes of playing again this season all but snuffed out, everyone figured he'd take the Atlanta Hawks down with him. Well, look who's in first place. The Hawks (11-4) have won four straight since their All-Star center tore his left pectoral muscle, an injury that required surgery and will keep him out for most if not the entire rest...

Smith, Hawks stepping up since Horford injury

When Al Horford went down for the season with his shoulder injury, you really wondered if the Hawks were prepared for what was ahead. Before the first game without Horford, a dazed team spouted the usual "we have to step up" maxims. And then there was Josh Smith, who initially seemed deluded, saying he didn't think his responsibilities would increase at all ("I...

Joe Johnson scored 24 points and came up with a key defensive play down the stretch, leading the Atlanta Hawks to their fourth straight victory since losing All-Star center Al Horford, 92-89 over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday night. The Hawks closed the third period on a 14-0 run, but the Trail Blazers responded with a 13-0 spurt starting the fourth to tie it up.

Hawks-76ers Preview

While the Atlanta Hawks have won each game since Al Horford's demoralizing injury, their schedule hasn't been particularly intimidating. They'll likely receive a much stiffer test with a trip to Philadelphia. In a meeting of division leaders, the Hawks look to win their fifth straight Friday night against a 76ers team trying to bounce back from its first home loss....

Atlanta Hawks: Hawks 92, Trail Blazers 89

The Hawks faced their toughest foe since Al Horford went down and won again. After the W they said a lot of things about guys stepping up to do more in his absence. Normally such cliches inspire eye-rolling from a cynical hack like myself but, I’ve got to say, that’s what’s happened so far. How else to explain a W in which the bench kept the Hawks in it until Joe...
