The Atlanta Hawks, short-handed at center following injuries to Al Horford and Jason Collins, signed 15-year veteran center Erick Dampier to a 10-day contract on Thursday. Dampier, 36, bolsters the team's roster for a tough stretch that begins with a game against Dwight Howard and the Magic on Friday night. The challenges continue with a game against the Miami Heat on Sunday and a visit to the Lakers on Tuesday. The game against the Lakers is the first of a five-game road trip that also includes games at Phoenix, Portland, Chicago and New York. Hawks coach Larry Drew said he needed another big body ''particularly with the schedule the next couple of weeks being what it is.'' Horford, an All-Star last season, was lost for at least three months with a torn pectoral muscle last month. He may not return before the playoffs. Collins, a backup center, sprained his left elbow last week. Collins, who has called the injury a ''moderate'' sprain, is expected to miss at least another week. The injuries left Zaza Pachulia as the only true center on the roster. Ivan Johnson, a 6-foot-8 undrafted power forward, has been playing behind Pachulia but lacks the size to match up against centers such as Howard and the Lakers' Andrew Bynum. Dampier was selected 10th overall by Indiana in the 1996 NBA draft. He has played in 972 regular season games and 57 playoff contests with Indiana, Golden State, Dallas and Miami. Dampier appeared in 51 games last season for the Heat, averaging 2.5 points per game and 3.5 rebounds.

Hawks beat Magic in OT, try out Dampier

Atlanta defeated the Magic 89-87 in OT from Orlando in the first meeting of the two since their playoff series last season. While it was a terrific game, Orlando had every chance to win it, but 3′s by Jason Richardson and Jameer Nelson both missed. I really don’t want to discuss this, as I would bring up the resilience that’s characterized this team all season....

Smith leads Hawks past Magic in OT

There was something about playing Orlando last season that brought out the best in the Atlanta Hawks. That trend apparently has trickled into a new year. Using most of the same blueprint that allowed them to dominate the Magic in both the regular season and playoffs last season, the Hawks used their size and some timely free throw shooting late to grind out an 89-87 overtime victory...

Behind Enemy Lines: Atlanta Hawks

Behind Enemy Lines: Atlanta Hawks - Pacers CenterAtlanta Journal Constitution We played like a desperate team,” Smith said. “That is how we have to play night in and night out, like we need to win.” It wasn’t exactly easy. The third quarter almost bit the Hawks again. The Pacers cut an 18-point halftime deficit to just eight points, 80-72. They would get [...]Behind Enemy...

Hawks 97, Pacers 87

Josh Smith scored 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, leading the Hawks to a 97-87 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night that snapped Atlanta's three-game home losing streak. The Hawks, who had fallen behind by big margins in each game on the homestand, finally got off to a good start. Atlanta built a 21-point lead in the first half and withstood repeated runs by...

Pacers at Atlanta Hawks Game Thread

I will double check with coach Larry Drew pre-game, but according to the Hawks coach this morning he is planning no lineup changes for tonight’s game against the Pacers. Drew said Tuesday he was considering ways, including lineup changes, to get his team to play with more energy. He wants the Hawks to get their ‘mojo’ and ’swagger’ back as they have...

Magic Fall to Hawks in Overtime

Last April, the Atlanta Hawks knocked the Orlando Magic out of the playoffs when the Magic shooters shot just 26.2%.  Friday night the Magic got their first rematch with the Hawks at the Amway Center in Orlando but fell in overtime 89-87. The Hawks (18-9) got off to a great early start when they went on a 12-2 run and led by nine with 5:41 remaining in the first.  But the Magic...

Hawks 89, Magic 87 (OT)

Orlando–Before getting to everything the Hawks did wrong while blowing a lead before pulling out the W, let me take a minute to point out something that’s pretty remarkable. After a period in which it seemed as if the Hawks would never beat the Magic as long as Dwight Howard was around, it’s now to the point where the Magic can’t want anything to do with...
