PLAYERS: Monty Williams
Not surprisingly, the NBA has fined New Orleans Head Coach Monty Williams after negative comments he made about the league's concussion policy.  Williams was frustrated that his number one overall draft pick, Anthony Davis, could not travel with the team for a road game after a mild concussion.  Williams essentially said the league had gone too far with the policy and reminded everyone "it's a man's game."The NBA took exception to Williams' comments and fined him $25,000 according to Associated Press report from yesterday afternoon.  The league takes the health of players very seriously, and with concussions in particular, they want to do everything they can to protect player - even if that means protecting players from themselves. On Sunday, I covered this and explained Williams' comments come from the fact that he is an old-school guy and a former player.  Players want to play.  They don't care what the long-term repercussions are.  In Williams' case, he saw his guy with a mild concussion, barely an injury in his eyes.  Williams wanted Davis to be able to go to his hometown of Chicago to play.  It's understandable.  Williams isn't rooting for players to get more severely injured.  He is not tossing aside player safety.  But he does have a player's mentality and that will get you fined. The NBA's policy is right.  The fining of Williams was right.  Now the Hornets can move on and see about getting Davis back on the court.
