As we all know by now, the the Dwightmare is over, and the long-time disgruntled center is now a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. Since the trade went down, the Orlando Magic’s front office has faced much criticism from fans and analysts in regards to what they got back for Dwight Howard. Their compensation was highlighted by Al Harrington, rookie Moe Harkless, and three protected first round picks, and many felt that there were better offers on the table. One of those aforementioned better offers was rumored to be coming from the Houston Rockets, and their GM Daryl Morey. Well, you can now be the judge as the Rockets offer has been leaked.
The Rockets offer is not as good as most initially thought during the process. Many reports thought that the Rockets could be offering as many as three first-round picks and at least two of their many young prospects. However, a report by Sports Illustrated’s says that Houston was instead only offering two first rounders and one or possibly two of their prospects. One would assume a second prospect would only be thrown in if they were two prospects Houston was more comfortable parting ways with. Jeremy Lamb, who was drafted with the 12th pick by the Rockets, seems to be the piece that Morey and company in Houston were the most reluctant to throw into the deal.
Regardless, it still seems that Houston’s offer may have been the better haul than what Orlando ended up with. The key to knowing whether that last statement is true or false is to know how many of Orlando’s bad contracts the Rockets were willing to take back. Their signings of Omer Asik and Linsanity really hindered Houston’s ability to take back as many contracts as it may have taken in order for the Rockets to swoop in and steal Dwight Howard from the Lakers.
One thing is for sure, the dust is settled now, and the Lakers look like a threat for the title, while the Rockets look like a threat in the lottery.
