Found February 07, 2013 on Waiting For Next Year:
In a bit of a surprise move, Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Kyrie Irving went third overall in the BBVA Rising Stars draft, ultimately ending up on Shaquille O’Neal’s “Team Shaq.” Irving, the reigning NBA Rookie of the Year, was taken after the two players who are odds on favorites to win this year’s award in Portland’s Damian Lillard and New Orleans’ Anthony Davis. Selected 12th and 13th, respectively, were Irving’s teammates Tristan Thompson and Dion Waiters. Thompson, who one night ago said that he would like to play with Irving, was drafted by Charles Barkley for “Team Chuck,” while Waiters was later paired with Irving. Cavaliers center Tyler Zeller went undrafted and was a part of the four-man “blind draw” which ultimately landed him with Irving and Waiters on Team Shaq. Irving will also be joined by childhood friends Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Harrison Barnes. Irving is the reigning Rising Stars MVP, finishing with 34 points on 12-of-13 shooting and making all eight of his 3-point attempts in 2012. The rest of the rosters are as follows… Team Shaq: Damian Lillard, Kyrie Irving, Andre Drummond, Klay Thompson, Harrison Barnes, Chandler Parsons, Dion Waiters, Michael-Kidd Gilchrist, Tyler Zeller, Kemba Walker Team Chuck: Anthony Davis, Kenneth Faried, Kawhi Leonard, Bradley Beal, Ricky Rubio, Tristan Thompson, Nikola Vucevic, Brandon Knight, Isaiah Thomas, Alexy Shved [Related: I'm Kyrie: Irving makes history on 40-point night]

With Kyrie Irving focused, Cavaliers on a roll

With a refocused Kyrie Irving, the Cleveland Cavaliers are hoping to add to their recent success. A visit from the Charlotte Bobcats could also help in that attempt. The Cavaliers will try to earn their sixth win in nine games and fifth in their last six at home Wednesday night against the struggling Bobcats. After averaging 35.7 points and shooting 61.2 percent over a three-game...

Cavalier Film Room: Dotted I’s And Double T’s

When we last met in the film room, I sang the praise of a space cowboy named Marreese. This week, still feeling the exhilaration from Saturday night’s watershed win against OKC and the flattening of the Bobcats, I wanted to dig into Kyrie Irving’s fanastic Saturday night finish. More specifically, I wanted to dissect just how he set up the important dagger three pointer with...

Cavs' growth comes in form of trust

CLEVELAND -- Kyrie Irving stood in front of his locker, rubbed the back of his neck and looked at no one in particular. He was asked if he thought the suddenly surging Cavaliers are feeling more confident these days. You could say that, he said, before repeating himself while wearing a serious look. You could say that. Irving was speaking after the Cavs 119-108 win over visiting...

Marreese Speights scored 18 points and Tristan Thompson added 16 for Cleveland, which scored 13 straight points in a stretch that began late in the third period to take control of the game. While We’re Waiting… Let the young man get buckets

While We’re Waiting serves as the early morning gathering of WFNY-esque information for your viewing pleasure. Have something you think we should see? Send it to our tips email at tips@waitingfornextyear.com. “It’s too early in Kyrie Irving’s career to know whether or not he’ll agree to let Nike light him all sexy and posit his game as evidence of a greater power and its...

Dion Waiters checks in after win over Bobcats

On Wednesday night, the Cleveland Cavaliers destroyed the Charlotte Bobcats. More important than simply beating the NBA's worst team, Dion Waiters, Tristan Thompson and Kyrie Irving combined  to score 58 points in the process. Forty-nine games into the season, the Cavaliers' "Rising Stars" have now led Cleveland to a 6-4 record (!!!) over the last ten....

Cavaliers declaw Bobcats

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Kyrie Irving scored 22 points in just three quarters, rookie Dion Waiters added 19 and the Cleveland Cavaliers didn't overlook a team with a worse record than their own, rolling to a 122-95 win over the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday night. The Cavs were coming off a stunning upset of Oklahoma City, one of the league's best teams. It would have been easy...

The Diff: Young guards and high usage rates

Thanks for indulging me with our little strikeout side trip last week. Now, I’m back at it with more basketball stats craziness. Hope you enjoy. In my first-ever edition of The Diff, I wrote about the potential of new All-Star Kyrie Irving. It started with a simple question: “Will Irving ever be a top 10 player in the NBA?” That specific topic aside, there were some deep...

Three in a row! Cavs beat Magic 119-108

What? The Cavs have another three game win streak? Two in one season? A guy could get used to these things. Kyrie Irving led Cleveland with 24 points (along with eight assists and six boards) and Marreese Speights and Wayne Ellington came off the bench to score 18 and 14, respectively, and the Cavaliers beat the Orlando Magic for the first time since the LeBron era, 119-108. Tristan...

Cavs (14-34) VS. Bobcats (11-36) - Game 49

OPENING TIP The Cavs typically havent had much luck against the leagues worst in the Kyrie Irving era. But such is not the case vs. the Bobcats. The Cavs have beaten them five straight. And after getting an earful from Byron Scott about performing less-than-stellar against doormats, the Cavs are looking to bring it from the start against the leagues worst team, record-wise. Venue...

Small goals paving the way for big wins in Cleveland

The mountain has been turned into a series of considerably smaller molehills. While the Cleveland Cavaliers have a long way to go before they are even within eyesight of the top, each rest station along the way comes with its own intrinsic reward. After being embarrassed by 18 points in Detroit late last week, the Cavaliers — the team as well as the front office —  had a series...
