Is Alonzo Mourning a Hall of Famer? It's a tougher question than you think. His career averages are: 17.1 PPG, 8.5 REBS, 2.8 BLKS. That's pretty average. But before Mourning was diagnosed with kidney disease in 2000, his career averages were over 20 points, 10 Boards, 3 Blks. From 1992-2001, Mourning made six all star teams in 8 years. He won two defensive player of the year awards and is the Miami Heat's all time leading scorer. He was all NBA first team in 1999 and made the second team in 2000. He has won two gold medals and a NBA championship.
Zo' helped turn the Charlotte Hornets from a laughingstock into a 50 win playoff team. When he was traded to the Miami Heat Zo' turned them into division champs. Mourning was underappreciated as a center because he played during the time of NBA greats. Shaq, The Admiral, Hakeem the Dream and Patrick Ewing all roamed the paint in the 90's. Four of the ten greatest centers of all time played in Mourning's era. They got all the headlines and ink. Should Mourning get in the HOF? I haven't made up my mind yet. But if you look at his whole career, he is awfully close.
