On August 29th, 2013 Ish Smith and Viacheslav Kravtsov were traded to the Phoenix Suns for Caron Butler, immediately, Smith had a surprising impact on his new found team, in which he had a career high for assists with 8 in a 104-98 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans.
Things got even better for Smith when he became the third player to get two 8 or more assist games while playing under 20 minutes with the Suns, with the first two players being Jeff Hornacek and Goran Dragic, who are ironically his team mate and his head coach.
As the surprising Phoenix Suns were defeating teams such as the Trailblazers, Spurs, and Pacers, Ish Smith showed that he was not only productive in these wins, but he was proving not only to the Suns, but the whole league that he has talent. Smith is six foot and around 175 pounds, but this guy is fast. Not only that, his court vision is solid.
At times, he has even out rebounded his taller team mates along with the opponents players. If he wanted to, Ish could average 10 points per game, this reasoning being because 95% of the time he can explode to the hoop and lay the ball in to score over any player in the league.
In his first start with the Phoenix Suns, Smith may have been “ineffective” as some said, but his stat line was there, he finished with 13 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists in a blow out loss to the Utah Jazz. Smith, has had a long journey and has finally found a home here in Phoenix Arizona, with a nice fan base behind him. Smith, who has never been on a team for longer than one year, has gone on to quote that he “Happy To Ride The Wave” Smith said.
Smith has played for 5 NBA teams in his three year NBA career, Rockets, Grizzlies, Warriors,Magic and Bucks not including a stay at the NBA D-League, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Along with this, Smith has averaged 2.9 per game, 1.9 assists and 1.3 rebounds per game.
