By Aaron Kopperl – Knickswag Contributor According to a tweet from Ian Begley of ESPN New York, new Knick Kenyon Martin desires to continue his career beyond this season and “would love” to re-sign with the Knicks this offseason.  This comes as great news to the Knicks who had worked so hard to sign Martin since the summer of 2012 where they attempted to acquire him in a 3-team trade, according to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News. It is now obvious why Glen Grunwald, Allan Houston and company wanted K-Mart in the blue and orange.  Martin has provided a huge and timely boost to a Knicks team with so many big men currently on the shelf.  K-Mart has done more than supplement for the loss of reigning Defensive Player of the Year Tyson Chandler, with his tenacious brand of defense and ferocious put-back slams.  Martin is probably even more versatile than Chandler both offensively and defensively. All of these factors illustrate why Martin should be inserted into the starting lineup alongside Felton, Shumpert, Melo, and Chandler.  However, Coach Woodson stated that he will relegate Martin to the bench when Chandler returns which means that James White will most likely continue to open up games, unfortunately? As I’m sure you’re all aware, the Knicks have quite a bit of money locked up in their stars, which leaves the team in a tricky spot financially.  The Knicks are currently over the cap which means they will not be able to make any sign-and-trades and will only have the $3 million taxpayers’ exception available to spend on a free agent.  The Knicks should strongly consider using all of the exception, or at least a large portion of it, to re-sign Martin this summer if he continues to play at the level we have seen the past month.  It’s a win-win for both parties; the Knicks would be signing a tough defender and emphatic dunker, while K-Mart would finally receive the money he has been seeking for the past year.
