Kevin Garnett Opens Up On Victor Wembanyama: 'A Different Effect To The Center Spot…'

Speaking on ‘KG Certified' this week, legendary NBA big man Kevin Garnett revealed his thoughts on Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs. According to Garnett, Victor has impressed him already and is on track to be a revolutionary player at his position.

"Wemby's been looking crazy man,” said Garnett. “You remember when started shooting the long ball and everybody was like like “ooh and “ahh”? He’s brought a different mix, a different effect to the center spot. Not only is he moving and growing the game but he making the five damn near look like the three. Wemby is damn near KD I'm the five. He's bringing a dynamic to the five that if you can't slide or move your feet, it's gonna be hard.”

As a basketball Hall of Famer, Garnett knows more than most what it takes to be an NBA superstar. During his career, Garnett dominated with strength, skill, and relentless willpower that often overwhelmed opponents. He retired in 2016 as a 1x champion, 9x All-Star, 9x All-NBA player, and one of the greatest Timberwolves of All Time.

Victor still has a long way to go before he builds a resume of equal weight but he’s off to a pretty good start in his first 65 games with averages of 21.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, and a league-high 3.4 blocks per game on 46% shooting. As a great shooter, finisher, defender, and rebounder, Victor can do everything on the court, all while handling the ball like a guard.

At just 20 years old, Wemby is proving to be a true NBA superstar but this is only the beginning of his story and unless he starts to win more consistently, he will never reach the levels of Garnett, Duncan, and other all-time legends.

Victor Wembanyama Is Ready To Win Now

As good as Victor has been this season, the Spurs have been a disaster from day one. Earlier this season, the team endured a franchise-record 18-game losing streak and they’ve been unable to recover ever since. Currently, they sit dead last in the West with an 18-56 record.

Every player has been on a bad team at some point and it shouldn't be held against Victor that the Spurs are so far behind this season. Even so, the young star doesn’t feel like waiting to start competing for championships. Victor is ready to win as soon as possible and recent rumblings indicate that he’a already putting pressure on the franchise to build a contending roster.

This summer, with a lot of money to spend, the Spurs are expected to pursue a number of options, including trading for a point guard like Trade Young or Dejounte Murray.

Fo now, with less than 10 games to go, there's nothing left for the Spurs to do but play on and finish this campaign. But the clock starts now for the front office and they only have so much time to get things right before Victor grows impatient. For a star of his caliber, anything less than excellence is unacceptable and he’s determined to elevate his team to a respectable place before too long. The ball is in the GMs hands now to not let Vic’s talents go to waste.
