Fox Sports Detroit:
EAST LANSING, Mich. Magic Johnson was home Tuesday night.
He just had to remember not to get too excited about it.
"I have to be a professional tonight," Johnson said before joining ESPN's broadcast of No. 1 Indiana vs. No. 4 Michigan State. "I'd be lying if I didn't say I wanted Michigan State to win I hate it when they lose but I've got a job to do."Unfortunately for Johnson, his alma mater lost 72-68 after a late rally by the Hoosiers.Still, Johnson jumped at the chance to return to East Lansing as a broadcaster.
"They didn't even have to pay me for this I'm here at the Breslin, back home, to see two of the best teams in the country," he said. "I would have been watching the game at home anyway, so this is even better. I get to soak in the atmosphere."
Johnson, whose jersey hangs from the Breslin Center rafters, said that the Big Ten is almost as strong today as it was when he was winning the national title with the Spartans in 1979.
"When I was there, we had theNo. 1pick almost every year, and we had great depth across the league," he said. "The Big Ten is close to that again. It is, by far, the best conference in the country, and it has at least four teams that have a real shot at winning the tournament. We're seeing two of them tonight."
He also paid tribute to the late Dr. Jerry Buss, the owner of the Lakers who became Johnson's business mentor.
"Dr. Buss was like a second father to me, and the things he taught me are the reason I own the Dodgers today," he said. "I wouldn't be the man I am today, and I definitely wouldn't be the businessman I am today, if it weren't for all the things he did for me."

MOVING ON UP
Lakers point guard Steve Nash collected his 10,142nd assist on Wednesday, pushing him past Magic Johnson and good for fourth on the NBA's all-time list.
Many people were shocked to find out during their lunch breaks Monday afternoon that longtime Lakers owner Jerry Buss had passed away after his long fight with cancer.
Buss touched many lives since purchasing the Lakers in 1979. The purchase price of $67.5 million was the largest transaction in sports history at the time. Buss produced 10 championships for the Lakers during his reign...
Why did ESPN have Magic Johnson working last night’s Michigan State-Indiana game with Dickie V. and Mike Tirico? Because that’s what you do in mid-February to make a #1 vs. #4 much more important. The Hoosiers won, 72-68, and now have the inside track to a Big Ten title.
Who, besides dorks at Indiana, give two ***** about a Big Ten basketball title? Yeah, you get to hang a banner...
The Michigan State Spartans host this week’s marquee college basketball game on Tuesday night, as No. 1 Indiana visits East Lansing. For the fourth-ranked Spartans, the game stands as a huge one — MSU could take a stranglehold on the Big Ten race with a win, as well as close in on a No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament.
But could a victory also push Michigan State close to the...
Rules are here, for those unfamiliar.
Standings through thirteen games are here. (Note: Everyone who made a pick the first game was added to the spreadsheet even if they didn’t get the pick correct. After that game, only new people that got a correct pick were added to the spreadsheet. As a result, some people might not see their names on the spreadsheet if they didn’t pick...
Editor’s note: this interview is being re-run from 11-1-11. In honor of tonight’s big game versus the Hoosiers, and the growth of Twitter since then, the issues it raises are more relevant than ever.
Like last year’s Big Ten media day, the discussion of Twitter and various social media with Michigan State coach Tom Izzo is enlightening and informative. At 2010 conference college...
Another week, another Big Ten showdown with national implications.
With a five-game win streak including last week’s 75-52 rout of Michigan,...
Cedar Village is definitely one of the more famous college apartment communities, particularly in the midwest. There have been plenty of riots there after Michigan State victories and losses. Last night was rather mild since only three couches and one dumpster were burned after their loss to the #1 ranked Indiana Hoosiers. According to mlive.com, “MSU basketball losses and...
The NBA and the media cannot move on from Michael Jordan. This was never more evident than the last seven days when the majority of stories were surrounding Michael Jordan and/or his 50th birthday. Ironically, it was a decade ago at the All-Star Game in Atlanta, that the NBA had a special halftime celebration to salute Michael Jordan, in what was his final appearance in the midseason...
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Tom Izzo met with the media following Michigan State’s 72-68 loss to Indiana on Tuesday at the Breslin Center.
Watch and listen to his postgame comments in the embedded media player below:
This game was supposed to be about Michigan State. At least that’s what we were led to believe. This was the Spartans chance to take control of the Big Ten race, to make a case for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and to do so in front of their beloved hero, Magic Johnson.
Nobody, it seemed, wanted the Hoosiers to win this game. Few believed they could. Not the broadcasters...
