Either Mark Cuban does not understand April Fools Day is limited to April 1 or he really is just a man of business. Because what I just read on ESPN is not a good basketball move at all. Mark Cuban is considering drafting Baylor senior Brittney Griner in this year's draft. No joke, Cuban is pondering drafting the first woman in the NBA. "If she is the best on the board, I will take her. I've thought about it. I've thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I'd lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it's not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it." - Mark Cuban prior to tonight's Mavs/Lakers game I'm just baffled. Cuban definitely sees a business opportunity, but here's the thing. There's no gaurantee Griner will make it in the W-N-B-A, let alone the N-B-A. Cuban says he's willing to invite her to tryout and see what she can do against the guys. However, here is the honest truth. Griner's big draw is her size and ability to dunk. However, how far does her game really stretch? She doesn't have much of a jump shot, and if a bunch of Louisville girls can shut her down, how do you think she is going to do against the likes of a star-studded forward group in this current NBA? Griner would be eaten alive if she ever saw the court. And the only time she would see the court is if Carlisle pulled one from Like Mike and basically screamed "YOLO." Griner's only reason for being in a Mav's uniform would be to put more "asses in seats" and not to play. However, if she ever did get in, I don't think a magical pair of Michael Jordan basketball shoes could even help her. Listen Cubes, it's a cute marketing idea, but do some scouting and you may find there is plenty of unnoticed talent late in the second round of the draft. However, it's all about the money, and Cuban definitely sees potential in suiting up Griner for the NBA's Summer League. Vegas would definitely see more fans in attendance if Griner actually played. Though, for her sake, I really hope this is just Cuban running his mouth. The Summer League is one of my favorite sports events of the summer. It is mainly, because I am a huge basketball nerd, but to see the new rookies get some action and a lot of talent fighting for NBA contracts is a big grab for myself. Listen, no disrespect to Brittney Griner, but if I was her, I would not bother with Cuban and the Mavericks organization. I may be totally wrong, but I feel fairly confident I am not. Griner is an icon for women's basketball, and she needs to keep it that way. I am not saying don't shoot for the stars, but know your limitations. Anyway, if you would like to call me sexist or something, tweet me: @JoeBendiez.
