CBS Sports NCAA basketball analyst Charles Barkley defended fellow analyst Doug Gottlieb for cracking a joke about bringing a “white man’s perspective” to CBS’ March Madness pregame show Thursday night.

“I know this has nothing to do with the game. I want to say something about Doug Gottlieb,” Barkley said. “He made a joke earlier tonight and people are going crazy. All those idiots on Twitter, which I would never ever do. Listen, me, Kenny, Greg Anthony and Greg Gumble did not take that personally. So all you people at home who’ve got no life and are talking bad about Doug Gottlieb, get a life. It’s over with. It’s no big deal.”

All four of Gottlieb’s African-American co-hosts — Greg Gumbel, Kenny Smith, Greg Anthony and Charles Barkley — were caught off guard by Gottlieb’s comments that began CBS’ Sweet 16 coverage for the night.

Here’s the video of what Gottlieb said:

ESPN’s Mark May tweeted that Gottlieb should be fired:

Barkley’s comments quickly ended the firestorm. Gottlieb also apologized.

“It was not a smart thing to say and I apologize,” Gottlieb said in a statement through CBS.

  • Mark May should lighten up. I can't stand Doug Gottlieb and I think he is a punk but did he really say anything that was that bad. This whole world is way to sensitive. When black guys make a comment about white people nothing is ever said but a stupid innocent comment like this gets blown out of proportion.
  • people have to be fair. i was watching nba round table with barkley and shaq and others. barkely was kidding to steve smith and said what you got traded for a white guy. everybody laughed. can you imagine if joe montana kidded dan marino he was traded for a black qb.he would have killed come be fair i have a thousand more examples . blacks can say anything now and no one says anything. i am sick of it.......................
  • Mark May is a fake.
  • Amen !!!
  • "blacks can say anything now, and no one says anything". so it sounds like blacks had their place and have now left to read your comment. Say Barkley called out the nonsense so chill, or should he go back to his place....
  • Fire Mark May and everything is even.Racism will go away when the blacks quit bring it up in every conversation. Wouldn't they have a fit if there was a NAAWP organization?

Doug Gottlieb tried to make a joke during CBS’ broadcast of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night, and he ended up hearing nothing but crickets and Twitter outrage. He later apologized. “It was not a smart thing to...

As we reported yesterday, CBS college hoops analyst Doug Gottlieb got the side eye while making an ill-placed joke about bringing the “white man’s perspective” to a set that included an all black group that included: Greg Gumble, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, and Greg Anthony. “I don’t know why you guys ask me, I’m just here to bring diversity to this set, give kind...

Doug Gottlieb moved from the booth to the studio this weekend for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 for CBS's NCAA Tournament coverage.  The big question for the most polarizing basketball analyst at CBS was how he would mesh with the crew of Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Greg Anthony, and Greg Gumbel. Answer: Not. Well. Gottlieb's first on-air statement was a joke that fell...

Video: Doug Gottlieb makes awkward diversity joke

Love him or hate him, Doug Gottlieb is one of the best analysts in college basketball. Tonight, he joined the primetime set for the CBS pregame show with Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Greg Anthony and lead host Greg Gumbel. That made Doug the white guy of the group. He felt this would be a good time to make a diversity joke that made for a somewhat awkward exchange “Cream rising...

The lifeblood of social media and increasingly all media is politically correct phony outrage. Lacking the courage and financial freedom to express outrage over legitimate injustices, the mainstream media have chosen to mask their cowardice and corporate constraints by taking up causes trending on Twitter. Doug Gottlieb, the CBS Sports broadcaster, is the latest victim of this...

Duke reaches Elite 8 with stellar defense, Barkley not impressed

Just a couple of thoughts after watching Duke defeat Michigan St. 71-61… The Blue Devils are tough, they are really tough. You just don’t wear down a Tom Izzo coached Michigan St. team, but that’s exactly what Duke did. They matched the Spartans physically early. Seth Curry was carried Duke offensively for much of the game, and then Duke’s defense in particular the interior...

Yankees bench Derek Jeter

Things have hit rock bottom in the Bronx.  In what should be a celebratory month of Derek Jeter‘s career (and potential final postseason appearance), the New York Yankees are just about out of options to make the playoffs.  One last option was exercised today.  Bench Derek Jeter.  Not demote him out of the number two spot.  Not give him a day of rest.  Benched.  The American...
