World famous writer and director Quentin Tarantino appeared on NPR’s “Fresh Air” earlier this week to discuss the opening of his new movie, “Django Unchained.” The film, which stars Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio, follows the journey of a slave-turned-bounty hunter who is out to rescue his wife from a Mississippi planation owner.

In talking about the movie, Tarantino got into how African-American culture was a part of his life growing up. In fact, he claimed his mother dated Wilt Chamberlain in the 1970s.

“Black culture is my culture growing up,” Tarantino explained. “Yeah, it was almost like a sitcom the way we lived in the ’70s. She was in her 20s, she was hot, alright, she was a hot white girl and her best friend named Jackie was a hot black girl and her other best friend, Lillian, was a hot Mexican girl. And they lived in this swinging singles apartment with me.

“It was the ’70s. I lived with these three hip single ladies, all always going out on dates all the time, dating football players and basketball players … my mom dated Wilt Chamberlain. She was one of the thousand.”

The entire audio is available here. The host then asked Tarantino if it affected his sense of sexuality, knowing that his mother and her friends were engaging in sexual activity basically right under his nose. Unsurprisingly, Tarantino said he was perfectly cool with it and that it was fun always having the boyfriends try to win him over by buying him footballs and taking him places.

If it were any pro basketball player other than Wilt, it may come as a surprise that a famous director’s mother dated him. With how many women Chamberlain has allegedly been with, interesting tales of his sexual endeavors are not tough to come by. After all, let’s not forget what Kobe Bryant said about Wilt’s skills.

  • it amazes me that people put personal information about themeselves or family members on the net or speak about it in an interview. attention getter? ignorance? it also amazes me that people can't just be who they are....QT is not black and no matter how hard he tries, he never will be. that he relates to a whole race of people is foolishness; that he relates to a person because they have the same interests, enjoy eachother's company, cool, but why does it have to come down to race? because QT's mom dated Wilt or had a best friend who was black does not mean he relates to all people of color. no white person can say they know what it's like to be black, or vise versa. embrase who you are, be decent, maybe contribute something constructive to society and be proud to be part of the human race, regardless of your race, nationality, religion, sexual preference - don't try be something or someone you're not.....i love being an old white woman!!! however, being old and white really doesn't define who i am or what's in my heart, only my race and the fact that i am OLD!!! will there ever come a day when race means nothing? i think so....anything is possible, and with any luck, it'll be sooner rather than later - and all of you haters, regardless of race are going to be scratching your heads and wondering when this all happened. it's happening as we speak!!
  • Negro??? Boy are you lost in a time warp. How do you know his movies are dumbass, unless you're watching them? Unless you're Spike Lee, we're all watching QTs films!
  • A negro??? What is this 1952? And who says Tarantino is an emotional basketcase? Get your head out of your ass, your attitude out of the backwoods 19th century and your face out of other people's business. You don't know what you're talking about and in all likelihood, Tarantino doesn't care what you're saying.
  • love Tarantino and his flicks. Must be the influence of his mom!
  • His movies are dumb-assed. Same tired stuff since Reservoir Dogs. Still trying to convince us of how hip, cool, and black he is.
  • yeah, like...kill bill. your black comment is wrong.
  • And Inglorious Basterds!!
  • That explains all the black degradation in his movies. A black guy used to give it to his mother and make him go get his cigarettes.
  • I doubt Wilt smoked!!!
  • not my favorite director, he's doing something right, and each movie gets more acclaim and controversy. not bad for a guy who never went to film school. he's the american dream. so, his mom was one of the 20,000, not 1,000 that wilt chamberlin claimed to have bedded.
  • Truth (the american dream)!!!
  • Love Tarantino and his movies. I think he has dated black women too.
  • Hey Capybara91....I guess Inglourious Basterds was a hip, cool, and black film, huh?
  • I forgot to be impressed. The Holocaust wasn't a gratuitous violence punchline, anymore than the struggles of black people in this country. Besides, Scorcese did gratuitous violence decades before Tarantino and it's gotten a bit old. And Bigelow is doing non-gratuitous violence. So that leaves Quentin, post-Newtown, to sell his pseudo blaxploitation stuff with street-cred jive-ass Wilt nostalgia.
  • I'm sorry, but look at Tarantino. He is UGLY! And he looks exactly like his mother. Yes, Wilt was not choosy. "Hot, NOT!"
  • TARENTINO IS BRILLIANT.
HIS MOVIES ARE EXCITING AND CAPTIVATING.

    IT'S NOT ABOUT COLOR.
HE IS JUST PLAIN COOLER THAN COOL
  • I agree...this is not something you want to advertise about your white mom seeking out Wilt for sex...no one dated Wilt...you just got fu**ed...and, a hot white girl seeking a black man (yes negro) in the 70's was a little unusual...typically, they were too ugly or fat for white guys so they chased anything they could get...or they were just after the money...but Wilt wasn't the marrying type...so maybe she was just a slut....and this would explain some of the violent tendencies and absolute "weirdness" in his movies...or maybe he just sucks at making movies...I'm just saying..
  • Or why some of the "women" in his films are heroines??!! I don't know how his movies suck! They all receive great acclaims.
  • Gives a whole other meaning to "what a pair to draw to" ....
  • You might not want to run your mouth so much Quentin.
  • Circa 20% of all women in the L.A. metro area dated Wilt. It's nothing special.
  • And more than that from around the world!!
  • Like many in here, I haven't a CLUE what possessed Tarantino to out his mother as a slut, UNLESS... in HIS world, it's "cool" to have mindless one-night-stands AND expose your child to it, just like it's "cool" to throw foul language around like there's no tomorrow. I find most of Tarantino's movies engaging and well-written, but he doesn't come close to being in my top 10 best directors, maybe not even top 50. So in a way I'm talking myself out of being surprised or disappointed by what he did on Fresh Air. Tarantino may be many things to many people: "classy", he's not. Come to think of it, Tarantino is sort of like ... YardBarker!
  • well first of all it takes some balls to admit that you were raised by three whores of different ethnic backgrounds, personally i can relate being raised by an alcoholic mother and an eccentric pill-popping aunt or two.I have been told that i could be a writer if i put my mind too it,maybe that type of upbringing does give you a certain, yet peculiar way of looking at life.... maybe i should write a book and see if quentin would turn it into a screenplay

  • Wow..............who's mother didn't date Wilt?
  • congrats on outing your mom as one of the "unique" thousands that wilt dated. who cares anyway?
  • Is this Quentin's "Some of my best freinds are" moment?
