Though Cavaliers training camp is set to tip off within the next few weeks, Cleveland fans may have to be patient if they’re looking for news on free agent center Andrew Bynum. A report from FOX Sports Ohio’s Sam Amico says that Bynum, still rehabilitating from knee surgery, is “nowhere near ready” and may miss the entire preseason. This summer, Bynum signed a two-year, team-friendly deal with the Cavaliers that has widely been considered low-risk with potential high reward. The former All-Star center moved to Cleveland one week after being introduced and has been working out in attempt to return to the court sooner than later. “I’m there, focused. I’m doing everything I can do to get back,” Bynum told The Cleveland Plain Dealer in early September. That’s what all this is all about for me right now. I just want to play.” Given that it is in the best interest of both parties to ensure that Bynum is fully healthy prior to his return, the team is understandably being very cautious with his progress. Cavaliers GM Chris Grant has never been in the business of inflating expectations, and it would be wise for him to continue along this path when it comes to the knees of the seven-footer who, if healthy, could put his team squarely in the playoff hunt come Spring 2014. Amico’s report adds that even if Bynum does not suit up in the preseason, he could very well be in uniform when Cavaliers open up the regular season against the Brooklyn Nets on October 30.
