I'm sorry, fellow fans.

I know it's not my fault. I know that I have nothing to do with this. I know that I can't make it any better for you. I realize all of this. There's no reason for me to apologize, but I want to.

I want to because the NBA, its owners and its players won't do it. They won't apologize for the fact that greed, discontent and stubbornness forced the league to axe the first two weeks of the regular season. They won't apologize over the fact that two groups of extremely wealthy men are fighting over billions of dollars while the average person—also known as the fan that helps pay the salaries of all of the parties involved—is dealing with a recession.

It's a shame. It never should have come to this. Cooler heads could have easily prevailed. Concessions on both sides—true, actual concessions—could have been made way before each side claimed they had made them when they really didn't. Instead, pride got in the way of them actually getting together on a regular basis before September and negotiating in good faith and this is now where we're left. The diehard fans are heated and ticked off and, what may be even worse, the casual fans that the NBA has worked so hard to bring back since the previous lockout in 1999 are apathetic and as good as gone.

And it's only going to get worse. Now that games are canceled, the owners are only going to harden their stance and ask for even more. All of this 50/50 and soft cap garbage are now a thing of the past and both sides are back to square one. Expect the union to decertify at some point and for the court system to get involved, and I'm almost positive that the courts don't exactly guarantee an express lane to compromise. More games will be lost, more fighting will occur over our money and more fans will say "Screw the NBA" and turn their attention to football, hockey and college hoops.

We don't deserve this. You don't deserve this. The fans, concession workers, ticket takers, arena ushers, cleaning crews and anyone else with some kind of vested interest in the NBA deserves better. At this point, it just looks like neither side could possibly care less about that. While that probably isn't true, it certainly gives off the appearance. No apologies, just each side trying to look like the bigger people in the battle so that the wrath of the fans doesn't come down on them.

Instead, they've alienated us. They've forgotten about the fans, without whom there would be no NBA. They've pushed us to the side for the second time in 13 years and expect us to jump right back into their arms once this ridiculousness ends.

I'm sorry, NBA. It doesn't work that way.
