Early on in week three of the NBA free agency period, some interesting, but not so surprising, news has surfaced concerning some bigger names around the league. World Peace in New York One piece of news that originally surfaced late last week was that Metta World Peace, formerly Ron Artest, had been waived by the Los Angeles Lakers via the amnesty clause. The assumption is that the Lakers are looking to cut their luxury tax bill for the upcoming season. World Peace ultimately cleared waivers July 14 and became an unrestricted free agent, allowing him to sign with any NBA team. Almost exactly 24 hours later, the Knicks had agreed to a deal with World Peace. The deal is a two-year contract worth approximately $3.2 million. The second year of the contract is a player option. The Knicks will be the sixth team he has played for in his career and adds a veteran presence to the Knicks’ locker room. World Peace turns 34 in November. Rose declares himself healthy At the Adidas camp in Madrid, Spain, Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose left no doubt that he would be in the starting lineup for the Bulls on the opening night of the 2013-14 season. Rose sat out the entire 2012-13 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in April 2012. There was speculation at different times during the season that Rose would return, but he reiterated that he was not ready to return to the hardwood. Rose is currently on the Adidas D. Rose tour in Europe. He spent eight days traveling through seven European countries growing basketball internationally, promoting the latest Adidas product, and connecting with his fans. Teague staying in Atlanta The Atlanta Hawks have matched the Milwaukee Bucks’ four-year, $32 million offer sheet, thus retaining restricted free agent point guard Jeff Teague. Teague was drafted by the Hawks in 2009 out of Wake Forest. He took over the starting point guard duties for Atlanta in 2011, and has helped the team reach the playoffs in each of his four seasons with the franchise.
