NEW YORK - Brooklyn Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov cut short a skiing vacation in British Columbia to attend to the numerous issues plaguing his team during the previous 13 games. Those problems included 1-on-1 play, a stagnant offense as well as a lack of concentration, and, after seeing it linger too long, the Russian billionaire said he wanted to tackle those issues head-on. That meant making a coaching change and replacing Avery Johnson with assistant P.J. Carlesimo, who is the interim head coach. Though that move was officially made Thursday, Prokhorov said he decided to fire Johnson last week. A day after firing Johnson, Prokhorov addressed the decision at halftime Friday and watched the Nets coast for most of the night en route to 97-81 rout of the Charlotte Bobcats, who dropped their 17th straight game. "I cut my vacation short to be here to solve this problem," Prokhorov said during the opening statement of his 8 1/2-minute media briefing. "From the firs...

Mikhail Prokhorov addressed the Nets' coaching situation.
Avery Johnson was fired as head coach of the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday, one month after he was named Eastern Conference coach of the month, and two weeks after Deron Williams complained about the team’s offensive system. Brooklyn entered the season with high expectations after acquiring Joe Johnson in the offseason and re-signing Gerald Wallace. They started off 11-4 and won five...
Amidst a year where things have not gone as well as what had been imagined for the Brooklyn nets, head coach Avery Johnson is the first to feel the displeasure of ownership.
The Nets have fired Avery Johnson less than 30 games into the season following an embarrassing loss on Christmas day to the Boston Celtics.
The Brooklyn Nets have fired coach Avery...
According to an ESPN.com report, Brooklyn Nets head coach Avery Johnson has been fired by the organization. This firing is due to the recent struggles that the Nets have showed by winning only three of their last thirteen games after jumping out to an 11-4 start. The report was confirmed by Nets general manager Billy King.
Brooklyn Nets owner, Mikhail Prokhorov commented on the...
Word is that the Brookly Nets have fired Coach Avery Johnson.
This is still somewhat surprising, despite their recent tailspin into a 14-13 record. It should be pointed out that both Deron Williams and Joe Johnson have been less than stellar this season. Check out this quote given by Johnson just a few days ago:
“Let me give some real rocket science right now. Listen to this: at...
The Brooklyn Nets have fired Avery Johnson after the team has sputtered to a 14-14 start. That kind of record might have been OK in East Rutherford, N.J., but not for the new-look Nets in Brooklyn. The team has namd P.J. Carlesimo the interim coach.
Brooklyn got out to an 11-4 start, but have gone 3-10 since -- including two losses to those cross-borough rivals from Manhattan...
As first reported by Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski, the Brooklyn Nets have fired head coach Avery Johnson.
The Nets, who started off the season winning 11 of their first 15 games and tied for first in the Atlantic division with the Knicks, now have a 14-14 record. They are now barely holding on to the eighth spot in the East, just half a game ahead of the 76ers.
After another ugly loss to Milwaukee, the Nets’ tenth loss of December, Avery Johnson was finally “relieved of his coaching duties.” Most of the attention and blame has been directed at Deron Williams. I don’t agree. In fact, I thought this coaching change came late enough.
Avery Johnson is not a great coach and he was underachieving with the Nets. His record with New Jersey...
NEW YORK (AP) -- The Brooklyn Nets gave P.J. Carlesimo a victory in his debut and the Charlotte Bobcats a 17th straight loss, getting 26 points and 11 rebounds from Brook Lopez in a 97-81 rout Friday night.
A day after firing Avery Johnson, the Nets played as they did last month, when they were 11-4 and Johnson was Eastern Conference coach of the month. They are just 4-10 in December...
Deron Williams’ play certainly has had room for improvement this season.credit: gq.com
After news broke that the Brooklyn Nets fired head coach Avery Johnson, many began to point the finger at some of the underachieving Brooklyn players. Deron Williams is first on the list, as the max contract point guard is struggling to find his shooting touch.
While Williams didn’t accept...
Everyone was excited to have the Nets in Brooklyn. A state-of-the-art arena, new jerseys and a Russian billionaire couldn’t disguise the fact that we are still dealing with the same cursed franchise that played across the river in a swamp. After a 14-14 start, the Nets honored their history yesterday by kicking Avery Johnson out the door. The same coach that sat through two miserable...
Multiple stories reporting Avery Johnson‘s firing on Thursday described Brooklyn Nets players as “blindsided” by the news. By any normal standards, this should have been a shocking development: the reigning NBA coach of the month, who was given a thrown-together roster, getting the boot after a rough stretch in the schedule.
Nothing is shocking given the situation, however...
A soft spot in the schedule is helping P.J. Carlesimo get off to a smooth start as coach of the Brooklyn Nets.
One night after the Nets rolled past an opponent that hasn't won in more than a month, Brooklyn hosts a last-place Cleveland Cavaliers club that remains without its best big man Saturday night.
That should provide Carlesimo with a good opportunity to improve to 2-0...
