Photo Credit: Celticslife.com With the NBA Draft just minutes away, trade rumors are at an all-time high. Most of the time, trades being reported involve draft picks and teams maneuvering to move up or down in the draft order. However, Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports threw a monkey wrench in that phenomenon when he reported a blockbuster trades between two Atlantic Division rivals, the Boston Celtics and the Brooklyn Nets, that is centered around Celtics forwards Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce moving to Brooklyn. Here are some additional details from Woj: The Brooklyn Nets are finalizing a trade with the Boston Celtics to acquire future Hall of Famers Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The deal is pending Garnett waiving his no-trade clause. The deal centers around a package that would include Gerald Wallace, Tornike Shengelia, the expiring deal of Kris Humphries and three future first-round picks (2014, ’16 and ’18), sources told Y! Sports. Jason Terry also will be in the package going to the Nets, sources said. The Nets would send back Reggie Evans and do a sign-and-trade involving Keith Bogans and one more minimum-level player as part of package, a source said. The deal has been agreed to in principle, as Woj reports, but is contingent on Kevin Garnett waiving his no-trade clause. To me, that is up in the air; Garnett is loyal, probably to a fault. However, the prospect of bringing Paul Pierce with him must be appealing, and the ability to play for longtime rival Jason Kidd will sweeten the pot. If the trade goes down, it is a strong statement by each team. For the Celtics, they are waiving the white flag, and are in full rebuilding mode. Their only decision would be whether they feel Rondo is a guy to build around, or if they are going to completely start from scratch. Honestly, getting four first round picks for Garnett, Pierce, and Doc Rivers is about as well as they could do. On the other hand, the Nets are all-in for the next two years, and have to hope that Garnett and Pierce are enough to put them over the top. A starting five of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, the two aforementioned Celtics, and Brook Lopez is certainly formidable, but it doesn’t leave you much depth. Signing Andray Blatche, who is a free agent, becomes absolutely crucial. If the experiment fails, the Nets are dead in the water, and it will be years before they can realistically rebuild. However, we’ve seen that the franchise is not afraid to take risks, and you have to admire their boldness. In a league where most teams are pinching pennies, they aren’t afraid to open their checkbook, and take a shot. Your move, Kevin Garnett.
