Injuries almost have turned Malcolm Lee into an NBA stranger. Lee logged barely more games in two years with the Minnesota Timberwolves (35) than he did as a UCLA junior (33). He has undergone two surgeries on each knee and a hip surgery and was acquired in June by the Suns mostly because they had to take on his contract to move up one draft spot for Archie Goodwin. Lee 23 is trying to make sure you have not seen the last of him. Or that you are about to see the first of him. He has been in Phoenix for the past month working with Suns athletic trainers with the belief that he will be ready to participate when the team heads to Flagstaff for training camp on Sept. 30. He has a guaranteed $884000 contract but the Suns also will have 15 other guaranteed contracts with a maximum of 15 regular-season roster spots. The Suns believe in Lee’s talent but it is a matter of the 6-foot-5 guard’s health and whether he can recapture his athleticism and show his defensive aptitude. “Hopefully once I start doing some agility stuff on the court; I think I’ll still have my athleticism” Lee said. “I haven’t run in forever though. I’m just trying to strengthen these bad boys up so I can stay healthy and start making a name for myself.” Lee last played a game on Dec. 12 when he hyperextended his right knee landing after a rebound. He underwent a DeNovo procedure a new option to microfracture in which donor cartilage from a child is implanted in his knee lesion. Two days after that surgery Lee had right-hip surgery. That procedure shaved a bone and cleaned the damaged labrum that caused him pain for two years. The surgeries along with a groin injury to open his rookie season have been exasperating. Having his dreams crushed by injuries has turned Lee to meditation to power through the frustrations. “In college I never stretched or did the cold tubs” Lee said. “I just went out and played. I was 18 19 and could get away with things like that. That catches up with you. I’d tell that Malcolm to do everything to keep your body right. It’s like getting maintenance on a car. You’re not going to drive the heck out of it without getting the oil changed and the tires rotated. I just want to get healthy stay healthy and the rest will take care of itself.”
