Most people when they look at the roster the New York Knicks have assembled this season these five numbers jump out (40, 39, 38, 38, and 35). What are these numbers you ask? No these are not average minutes played for their starters or the numbers of games the Knicks have won the last five years. These numbers represent the ages of Kurt Thomas, Jason Kidd, Marcus Camby, Rasheed Wallace and Pablo Prigioni. While most beat writers and NBA insiders have been making AARP jokes and laughing at the Knicks front office for spending 21.3 million the next 3 years on Camby and Jason Kidd I take a much different approach.

In previous years the Knicks have done a much better job in bringing talent to the World’s Most Famous Arena. With the acquisitions of Amare Stoudemire, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler the Knicks have created arguably the most talented front-court in the NBA. However last season as injuries affected the team, they were forced to use their bench much more than they would have liked. While Lin and Novak were pleasant surprises, the likes of Josh Harrellson and Jared Jefferies were not the players any Knicks fan wanted to see playing major minutes.  Even though these players played hard and produced to some degree any lineup with players such as Jefferies, Harrellson, Mike Bibby, or Bill Walker in it really don’t bring fear to opposing coaches. Defensive focus can then be put towards stopping players such as Carmelo, Amare and J.R Smith. With that said, the acquisitions brought in this off season give the Knicks something they lacked last year…DEPTH, both offensively and defensively.
