On Thursday, Denver Nuggets small forward Danilo Gallinari became the 16th player warned this season by the NBA for violating its anti-flopping policy. The egregious flop for the ages incident occurred on Monday night during a road game against the New Orleans Hornets. Late in the 3rd quarter, Hornets center Robin Lopez fielded a pass down low in the paint before attempting a lay-in. Gallinari appears to try to initiate contact between himself and Lopez by extending his arms and then flailing backwards, ultimately going to the floor. The gambit did not pay off, as it sure looks like there was little contact at all, if any, Lopez’s shot was good and no foul was called. The flop in question: Man, that’s really, really bad. According to an SI.com report, if Gallinari is found to be violating the anti-flopping policy again, fines will be instituted as follows: Violation 2: $5,000 fine Violation 3: $10,000 fine Violation 4: $15,000 fine Violation 5: $30,000 fine For a sixth (or any subsequent) violation of the rule, the player will be subject to such discipline as the League determines is reasonable under the circumstances, including an increased fine and/or suspension. Fair enough, and while it should have no bearing on the punishment meted out for this incident, it remains true that Gallinari is becoming somewhat notorious for his flopping ways. Just do a YouTube search for “Danilo Gallinari flop” and see for yourselves.
