INDIANAPOLIS -- David West scored 25 points, Paul George added 22, and the Indiana Pacers beat the Utah Jazz 94-91 on Sunday night for their fifth straight victory. Indianapolis native Gordon Hayward had 21 points and Derrick Favors scored 17 for the Jazz, nine of them in the first eight minutes as Utah opened a 14-4 lead. A dunk from Favors cut the Pacers' lead to 89-86 with a minute left to play, and West missed a jumper to give Utah a chance to tie with 35 seconds remaining. Hayward cut the Indiana lead to one, but Lance Stephenson sank two free throws to seal the win. Ian Mahinmi came off the bench to score nine points for the Pacers and provide key minutes, as Roy Hibbert struggled to contain Favors. Utah came out of halftime to score eight unanswered points and force Indiana to call an early timeout. The Pacers retook the lead when Mahinmi was fouled on a layup. Mahinmi made the free throw to put Indiana up 60-58. CJ Watson, starting for the injured George Hill, scored 13 points for the Pacers. Hill sat out his second straight game with a bruised shoulder. All night long, Utah buckled under pressure from one of the NBA's best defensive teams. The Jazz finished with 18 turnovers, which led to 24 points for Indiana. George went down hard after being fouled on a drive to the basket late in the third quarter. George slammed to the floor and appeared to hit his head, but remained in the game to sink both free throws. Hayward rebounded from a slow start to put together one of his best games since January. In his fourth time playing in his native city, he shot 8 of 15 from the field after being held scoreless until the beginning of the second period. He scored seven straight points in the third quarter, keeping the Jazz in the game while the rest of the offense sputtered. Hayward, who led Butler to an NCAA championship game appearance in 2010, averaged 12.2 points on 34.1 shooting in 12 games in February. He came into the game having scored only 21 points in four games in Banker's Life Fieldhouse.

Bynum Still ‘Weeks Away,' Pacers View Him As Hibbert Clone

The Indiana Pacers signed Andrew Bynum on Feb. 1, but he hasn't appeared in any of their 13 games since. Bynum hasn’t played since Dec. 26 when he was still a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers and missed all of last season due to knee issues. The Pacers weren’t scared off by Bynum’s extensive medical history, but have been very careful with his health. The term "...

Vine: Gordon Hayward Breaks Paul George’s Ankles

Paul George has emerged as one of the best two-way players in the NBA and is considered a top defender on the wing. That doesn’t mean he can’t get his ankles broken on the court once or twice. Surprisingly, it wasn’t the doing of a Kyrie Irving, Russell Westbrook, or Rajon Rondo. It was actually Utah Jazz guard Gordon Hayward who almost caused George to take a seat: George...

Paul George, Pacers Flex Muscles; Other Impressions From Celtics’ Loss

BOSTON — Not so long ago, Paul George would have walked away from a game like this smiling from ear to ear. George scored 25 points, hauled in eight rebounds and swiped three steals, as well as hit the game-turning 3-pointer in the fourth quarter of the Indiana Pacers’ 102-97 win over the Boston Celtics on Saturday. Owing to his development into a superstar, however, he expected...

Utah Jazz refuse to stay the course

Over the past few years, many Utah Jazz fans have been frustrated with the direction of their team. After the Deron Williams trade, we continued to be in “win now” mode, even though we had made a clear move to rebuild for the future. We sacrificed giving minutes to promising young players Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter, and Alec Burks in order to make a run at the 8th seed. There...

A tale of two three's, a negated three by Rondo, a made three by George

With the game knotted at 90 apiece in the 4th quarter between the Celtics and Pacers. The Celtics had issues getting a play going against the best defensive team in the NBA. With 4:39 in the 4th quarter, the Pacers defense forced Rondo to take a deep three as...

George Hill Undergoes MRI, Will Sit Against Celtics

The Indiana Pacers will not have George Hill when they face the Boston Celtics on Saturday night. Hill injured his left shoulder late against the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday. "I'm trying to do all I can to help this team win a basketball game. If that's not on the court, that's being encouraging and being a positive teammate," Hill said after shootaround. "...

Pacers outlast Celtics

A coach in Frank Vogel's position can talk all he wants about embracing a new acquisition, hailing that player for the real (and invented) benefits his presence affords the team. It's the salesman role every NBA coach plays after a trade or free agent signing. It's talk. But it becomes something entirely different when a coach will throw that player into an unfamiliar...

What was supposed to be not much of a contest between the NBA leading Pacers and the bottom-dwelling Celtics turned into a really entertaining game. Kris Humphries, Celtics Struggle To See Improvements In Losses

BOSTON — If Paul George were just a little less of a player, if the Indiana Pacers were just a little less formidable defensively, the Boston Celtics could have started this week with the confident feeling that comes with winning two straight games. George really is that good, though, and the Pacers’ defense is that stingy. So after a dispiriting loss Saturday that hinged on...

Lakers Week In Review: Week 18

Let’s talk about small ball. Mike D’Antoni swears by it.  Statisticians point out that per 100 possessions, the Lakers’ smaller lineups outscore their opponents by more than their bigger lineups.  So why aren’t the Lakers winning more games? It took a franchise-record 19 three-pointers to beat the 20-38 Kings, who are 1/2 game ahead of the Lakers (20-39).  Other recent...
