After sitting out for the last two years, Phil Jackson wants back in the NBA, here’s the catch …not as a headcoach but as GM. What has Jackson really intrigued, sources say, is the opportunity to oversee an organization in the patriarchal style of Pat Riley with the Miami Heat or in a role similar to that previously held by Larry Bird with the Indiana Pacers. But it remains to be seen if a team will give him that sort of chance, given that the 67-year-old Jackson is the most successful coach in league history with 11 championship rings and has never held a prominent NBA personnel job. With openings this off season, Jackson will have teams talking to him to gauage his interest and it is possible a team might become creative enough to let him be coach/GM. Brooklyn hasn’t taking the interim tag of PJ Carlesimo and may wait to see how the team plays in the playoffs before deciding his fate.Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov likes splashy, and could look to make one splashy hire with Phil Jackson. It has been well chronicled that Philadelphia 76ers will be shaking up their front office and in need of a head coach, so could Jackson be talked into doing both jobs? The job security of Los Angeles Clippers coach Vinny Del Negro has likewise been questioned all season, with Del Negro in the final year of his contract. Picture Jackson coaching again in the Staples Center this time for the Clippers with Chris Paul and Blake Griffin giving the Lakers even more fits. Things could get even more jucier there if he landed there. There will more openings and now that Jackson has an itch to get back in the game, his name will linked to many of the openings, some true, some not so true. In Detroit according to a story on Yahh sports Detroit Pistons coach Lawrence Frank informed owner Tom Gores that he shouldn’t be retained for the third year of his contract unless the franchise is willing to guarantee the deal’s fourth-year team option, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Lawrence Frank guided the Pistons to a 29-53 record this season. (AP)In the week prior to completing his second season as Pistons coach on Wednesday night, Frank delivered this message to Gores and Detroit general manager Joe Dumars in face-to-face and telephone discussions, sources said. Within the organization, Frank has been insistent that the Pistons’ full-blown rebuilding project and recent instabilities in the head coaching position make it largely unworkable for him to return as a lame-duck coach for the 2013-14 season. Nevertheless, Frank has been passionate in his desire to stay the course through Detroit’s long-term rebuilding process. After purchasing the Pistons in 2011, Frank was Gores’ first significant hiring as owner. Correct me if I am wrong but usually 29-53 records get coaches fired and coaches don’t usually run around demanding to be giving a new contract. Maybe he knows that Jackson wants back in and is stating his case before Detroit decides to talk to Jackson. Frank had a decent run as Nets head coach in part because of Jason Kidd and Vince Carter. Yet some how I don’t see him as someone who should demand anything. Last I looked he hasn’t done much since he was let go in Jersey. And this season in Detroit hasn’t made him look that good either.
