Found April 06, 2013 on Project Spurs:
The Orlando Magic have a 19-57 record, one win up on the Charlotte Bobcats for the worst record overall in the league. While it's not the most attractive record, very few (if any) will say the Magic are heading in the wrong direction in the long term. Jacque Vaughn  has been praised by his peers this season and his mentor is no exception. After the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Orlando Magic in San Antonio, Gregg Popovich commented on Vaughn's approach to the team and what kind of job he's done so far. "He's done a great job of just instituting a system," Popovich said of Vaughn. "He what knows wins and what loses, and he knows that in the long run certain elements of the game have to be established and standards have to be set. That's really where he's put his emphasis. (OrlandoSentinel.com) Vaughn's situation isn't the most attractive right now with the results the Magic have been getting, but the system he's developed in Orlando has the team believing and playing hard every game. That commitment from a team is hard to come by, but Vaughn's leadership shows with how his players conduct themselves on the court. "They have attention to detail," Popovich said later, discussing the Magic. "They play hard and they compete. That's a lot more important than anything else, especially when you're starting up a program." Vaughn has been one of the few from the "School of Popovich" that have gone to a new team and implemented a new system to fit their team over trying to copy Popovich's exact approach. When you see the Orlando Magic off and on the court, you see the San Antonio Spurs. As far as the system and plays, you see a system that the Magic benefit from that puts them in situations to succeed over them trying to be Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, or Tony Parker in that system. The Orlando Magic faithful should be excited with this young team developing under Jacque Vaughn and his influence rubbing off on his assistant coaches. Vaughn's success in learning from his mentor and establishing a new identity for his team will be the new blueprint for aspiring coaches in the league, especially with next year not coming soon enough for the Magic.

What has happened to Andrew Nicholson?

Things were going great for Andrew Nicholson. His advanced post game made him a player who could instantly get inserted into the lineup and produce for the Magic. Orlando could trust him with the ball to score more often than not. It was refreshing to see from the rookie that he was able to contribute almost immediately. Nicholson though has recently found himself buried...

What went wrong on Magic's final play in Chicago?

It is a common refrain from me, from Jacque Vaughn and from everyone else. This is a year for young players to grow and learn. This is a year to make mistakes and create habits. The habit part is probably the most important for this young squad. The one thing the Magic are guarding against in this period of losing is complacency or acceptance of losing. This is perhaps some of...

Yep, Magic still overpaying players

These articles come out every once in a while as the intersection of money, sports and production makes for interesting discussion. These articles have also not been kind to the Magic since Otis Smith went on his spending binge in the summer of 2009 and it continued with the woeful trade. The Magic are still paying Gilbert Arenas. Forbes Magazine came out with its list of...

Gregg Popovich says Jacque Vaughn has 'done a great job'

At the end of Wednesday's loss to the Spurs, Jacque Vaughn did something a bit different. Usually he points an acknowledgement to the opposing coach at the end of games before heading off to his locker room. For his mentor, Gregg Popovich, Vaughn went down to the other end of the court and visited the Spurs' head man and gave him a hug. There are a lot of San Antonio...

Orlando Magic one streak too short in Chicago

Beno Udrih and Nate Robinson were trading body blows as the Magic and Bulls played Friday night. There was no knockout punch to deliver. Just a major whiff from the Magic and Udrih. Orlando had the final possession, down by a point and got the ball to the guy they wanted. That would be the veteran point guard from Slovenia who scored 18 of his 27 points in the third quarter,...

Empty shot: Magic shooting falters against Cavaliers

The Magic just needed one shot to fall to stem one more tide from the Cavaliers. Orlando had controlled the game the entire way, taking eight-point leads in both the first and third quarter and staying in the lead for pretty much the entire game. Nikola Vucevic was dominating the glass. Kyrie Irving was struggling. The defense was creating stops. The Magic were doing everything...
