I just don’t understand why the Boston Celtics would consider exchanging Rajon Rondo for Pau Gasol. But the trade rumor has persisted in several media outlets, the latest being the LA Times. Oddly enough, according to the Times, it’s the Lakers who turned down the trade.

The teams talked last week about a trade for Celtics guard Rajon Rondo, though nothing was close to accomplished and discussions dried up.

The Lakers are unwilling to trade Pau Gasol for Rondo, making a deal with Boston unlikely before the trade deadline Thursday.

“Unless they give up Gasol, they’re not going to get a top-level point guard,” said a person familiar with the situation but not authorized to discuss it publicly.

Rondo, who just turned 26 years old, made his third consecutive All-Star team and is having his best season,  makes $11 million per season through 2015. Gasol, who is 31 years old and is having easily his worst season since being gifted to the Lakers joining the Lakers in 2008, makes $19 million through 2014. Unless there’s something else to these trade talks we don’t know, am I missing something?
