Primoz Brezec hails from Postojna, Slovenia where he grew to be 7-1. The large phenom started playing professional basketball as a teenager. He jumpstarted his career with his local team, Kraski Zidar, and went on to become a star. Brezec was further recognized and drafted by the Indiana Pacers when he played in the Slovenian Premier A League with Union Olimpija Ljubljana. Photo Credit: AP Photo/Darron Cummings Brezec was selected 27th overall in the 2000 NBA Draft that is remembered as one of the worst ever. Looking back only Michael Redd or maybe even Brian Cardinal would be better picks at that spot. In three seasons with the Pacers, Brezec only played in 62 games and never averaged more than two points per game. In 2004, Brezec was taken by the Charlotte Bobcats in the NBA expansion draft. His time in Charlotte is most likely known in Slovenia as his “Glory Years.” Brezec started in 72 games and completely broke out averaging 13 ppg and 7.4 rpg, he was second on the team in both categories behind Emeka Okafor. He followed that season with a slight decline, but still averaged a solid 12.4 ppg and 5.6 rpg. After that 2006 season his NBA career was never the same, and he simply became a pawn in forgettable trades. In 2007 Brezec was traded along with Walter Hermann to the Detroit Pistons for Nazr Mohammed. Months later he was traded to the Toronto Raptors for Juan Dixon and cash. In 2009 he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers, but they packaged him in 2010 with Royal Ivey and a second round draft pick to the Milwaukee Bucks for Francisco Elson and Jodie Meeks. After 14 games with the Bucks, Brezec went back to Europe to play basketball. He went on to play in Russia with Krasnye Krylya Samara and Lokomotv Kuban. He’s currently on BC Nizhny Novgorod, where he plays with former UCLA standout Dijon Thompson. -Schotz
