Toronto’s bench is considered a weak point so it was a good sign to see the group play well against Boston on Wednesday. Yes Boston is a poor squad but considering the struggles so far this pre-season Dwane Casey will take it. And he will especially take the performance of Landry Fields. Fields scored 14 points and added seven rebounds against Boston following up on a nine-point five-board effort at Minnesota. After a brutal initial Raptors season marred by an injury Fields is looking to bounce back particularly where his outside shooting is concerned. As a Knick Fields hit 86 threes as a rookie then 31 the next year. Dealing with a wonky elbow Fields nailed only two all of last season. What would it mean to Casey if Fields suddenly recovers some of his lost form? “Oh that would be huge. It’s not a must that he’s got to knock down three-point shots but if he does that if his shot comes around ...” Casey said imagining the possibilities before going back into coach mode. “I don’t want him to press into thinking that’s the reason we need him out there. If it happens it happens … (But) knocking down shots would be a big plus for the entire team.” Fields shot 39% from three as a rookie but his game has always been more about all-around play. He might have the highest basketball IQ on the squad and is excellent on the glass. “He gives us so much more like last night — his rebounding his energy he helped the second unit bust the game open just with his intelligent play” Casey said. “He’s a very good passer he can facilitate he does a good job of handling on the break. Landry’s also that glue guy.” Fields deemed his new shooting form a work in progress.
