Actually, it may have been just as accurate to say that Minnesota Timberwolves second-year player Ricky Rubio is the Bobby McFerrin of NBA point guards. But then the title would have lacked that Spanish flavor, a tasty paella of words, if you will. During a break in the action in the midst of yet another demoralizing loss for the reeling Timberwolves on Thursday, this one to the Los Angeles Lakers, Ricky Rubio attempted to inspire teammate Alexey Shved during a break with some old-fashioned bright-eyed, forward-thinking and hopefully infectious helping of positivity. Because if Ricky Rubio is one thing, he is most certainly a positive fellow. I wonder if Ricky met Zach Galifnakis, too. Zach seems like the kind of guy Ricky could be pals with. But then again, who isn’t? Rubio strolled up to Shved and reminded his sulking teammate to “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” But he didn’t use those words exactly. Instead, and in that wonderfully amusing accent of his, Rubio implored Shved to “Change this face. Be happy. Enjoy!” Man, I’d be willing to pay top dollar to attend a motivational seminar featuring Rubio, even if he simply repeated that simple, yet profound, truism. Be happy. Enjoy. Although I would have enjoyed Rubio’s on-court pep talk even more if instead of appearing to riff on 1988 hit song, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”, Rubio had elected to go with a solid — and just as positive — reference to the Matthew Wilder’s 1983 classic, “Break My Stride”. Because, you know, I’ve got to keep on moving. Then again, Ricky Rubio wasn’t even born when “Break My Stride” was released, so he probably isn’t familiar with the song. Crap, he wasn’t even born when “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” turned out to be a surprising hit song. And that makes me feel so, so old.
