Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey became the latest individual to predict the demise of the NFL, opining in a tweet that it’s “just a matter of time” before the league is “basically irrelevant as a sport.”

Morey’s tweet came in response to a tweet from a media member reacting to SLAM Magazine article in which he suggests the NBA will soon overtake the NFL as the predominantly popular sport in America.

Morey added, per Pro Football Talk, that the NFL lacks a “global base” and “no one plays anymore.”

Morey of course is not the first person to predict the NFL is going down in flames and one day will solely exists in the memories of the sports-loving American public. In fact, Morey isn’t even the first big-name NBA personality do say as much.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has long railed against the NFL, arguing the league is too greedy, too bloated, too dangerous and too invested in excess and over-coverage to survive forever. Cuban even suggested a few months ago that the NFL’s “implosion” is “absolutely” underway.

That said, it’s ludicrous to suggest the NFL is in its death throes. While the league has suffered a slight dip in television ratings, viewership remains remarkably strong. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell pointed out as much when downplaying slightly decreased ratings this past season.

“We always want ratings to go up, but we’re 37 of the top 50 shows, which is higher than ever,” Goodell told reporters before the Jacksonville Jaguars-Buffalo Bills Wild Card game on Sunday. “We’re likely to be the No. 1 show on Fox — excuse me, on all of television — the Fox Sunday afternoon game. Sunday night primetime is, for the seventh year in a row, the No. 1 show. ‘Thursday Night Football’ is No. 2.”

With that in mind, to predict the NFL’s demise is a foolish endeavor, despite how much Cuban and Morey wishes they could dance on the league’s grave.
