Found February 22, 2013 on Project Spurs:
Despite being linked to every big name available in the trade market, the San Antonio Spurs stood pat during the trade deadline. The team was linked to Al Jefferson, Josh Smith, and most recently J.J. Redick, but there's also reports coming out that San Antonio expressed interest in Jason Maxiell from the Detroit Pistons. The San Antonio Spurs also inquired about Maxiell, while the Oklahoma City Thunder were interested in Will Bynum. (DetroitNews.com) In the end, the same Spurs team that has the best record in the NBA is the same one that'll be going forward in the quest for a fifth championship ring. While many Spurs fans and NBA fans in general thought the Spurs would willingly stay pat, various reports like such from Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowski tell a different story. I discounted San Antonio-Redick talks a bit earlier, but sources insisting there are legitimate scenarios in play that make Spurs a factor. It shouldn't surprise fans that the Spurs may have had a legitimate interest to upgrade in one or more positions for the stretch run, but there were many factors working against the team. If the Spurs truly wanted to trade for a big like Josh Smith or a versatile guard like J.J. Redick, it wasn't going to come without a hefty price. One of the main factors on why the Spurs most likely didn't get a trade done is simple: they're just too good. The Spurs have a solid core with this team that probably ranges from their starters to ninth player in the rotation. The players San Antonio were reportedly interested in are borderline All-Stars and, realistically, all they would have gave were players who thrive in their system. The three players mentioned at the beginning of this article have various characteristics on the court, either in a team aspect or individual. With the exception of the Spurs' "Big 3" (Tony Parker, Tim Duncan, and Manu Ginobili), Kawhi Leonard, and probably Boris Diaw, the rest of the squad aren't attractive players who can thrive outside a system for a player who may earn $13+ million next season. Even though the organization didn't pull a deal that would've put them over the top in the league, the Spurs are still the best team in the NBA right now record wise. Tony Parker is having an excellent season while Tim Duncan has found the fountain of youth at 36 years old. The rest of the team seems comfortable playing alongside each other and there's essentially no egos on the team, unlike if a trade would've gone down. Now that the trade talk is over, the Spurs know what they're working with and what their opponents have prepared against them for the playoffs. Now is when the real season starts for the San Antonio Spurs.
