Stephen Curry documentary premieres to huge cheers at Sundance

Stephen Curry is used to getting standing ovations. Usually they come on the basketball court.

"Underrated" is a documentary from Apple Original Films and A24, showing Curry's rise from an undersized, under-recruited high school player to surprising college star and later two-time NBA MVP. It focuses on his time at Davidson University and its improbable run to the Elite Eight of the 2008 NCAA Tournament. Davidson fell short of knocking off eventual champion Kansas when its game-winner missed at the buzzer.

The film was produced by "Black Panther" director Ryan Coogler, and directed by veteran Oakland documentary filmmaker Pete Nicks.

Curry took advantage of two Golden State Warriors off days to attend the premiere in Park City, along with his college coach, Bob McKillop, and some of his Davidson teammates. Even though it was his own story, Curry was moved by watching it all again.

"It’s amazing to know that that story can inspire people to keep on keeping on," Curry said during a Q&A after the screening, via the Hollywood Reporter's Chris Gardner. "To surround yourself with amazing people, to push through the doubts, push through the criticism, push through the times when people kind of count you out."

This year has been a bit of a victory lap for Curry, who won his fourth championship and first Finals MVP award last June. Since then, he's hosted the ESPY Awards, premiered a documentary and starred in his own celebrity relationship game show. What's next for Curry? Maybe a visit to Wakanda.

Curry is on board for a third "Black Panther." With the Warriors sitting at 23-24, fans want to make sure there's a sequel to last year's playoff run first.
