The Cleveland Cavaliers were desperate to make a big splash this off-season. After being thoroughly out-coached and out-played in the Eastern Conference semifinals, at the hands of the Orlando Magic, General Manager Danny Ferry seemed determined to alter the look of the franchise. Rumors surfaced early on about players like Trevor Ariza, Amare Stoudemire, Rasheed Wallace, and even Ron Artest, but none materialized into reality. Sure, the Cavs did trade for Shaq, but that alone could not get them over the top. It was widely thought that the Cavs would not re-sign Anderson Varejao, after Rashard Lewis made him look silly in the playoffs, but Cleveland did. Perhaps a desperate move, but certainly one that will come back to haunt the franchise for years to come.
